Replacing a car key: the questions we get asked

Which makes and models can you replace keys for?

We cover 33 manufacturers and 173 individual models that have their own page on this site, from Abarth to Volkswagen. The list is not exhaustive — if your model is not shown, enter your registration above and we will confirm the key your vehicle uses.

Is a replacement car key cheaper from an auto locksmith than a main dealer?

Usually, yes. A dealer normally wants the vehicle brought to them and charges for the key, the programming and the time. We come to the vehicle and program the key where it is stood, which removes the recovery cost as well.

Do you have to go to a dealer to get a car key programmed?

In most cases, no. Cars from roughly 2000 onwards are largely programmed at the roadside through the OBD port. Newer vehicles that use component protection need dealer-level immobiliser data, which we carry, so we can still usually come to you rather than the other way round.

How long does a replacement car key take?

We aim for same-day on most jobs. The exact time depends on the model and the type of key: adding a spare to an existing set is quicker than an all-keys-lost job, and a keyless proximity fob takes longer than a bladed transponder key.

What is the difference between a spare key and an all-keys-lost job?

A spare is cut and coded from a key you still have, so the car can be opened and the immobiliser read the easy way. All-keys-lost means there is nothing to copy from: we have to gain entry, read the immobiliser data and write a new key from scratch. It takes longer and costs more, which is why the two are quoted separately.

What does a replacement key cost?

It depends on the make, the generation and whether you need a spare or an all-keys-lost job. A bladed transponder key is the cheaper tier; a keyless proximity fob, or any job where every key is lost, costs more because of the fob and the programming involved. Enter your registration and we will confirm the exact price before we set off.
