Regain Entry Into Your Citroën

From the C1 and C3 to the C4, C3 Aircross and C4 Cactus — plus the Relay, Dispatch and Berlingo vans — a lost, damaged or stolen Citroën key stops you dead, because a modern Citroën is immobilised by its BSI until a key has been coded to the car.

A main dealer will typically want the car recovered, an appointment days out, and a bill that stacks the key, the coding and the transport together. A high-street key cutter cannot help either: Citroën long ago moved from the older external-cut VA2 key to the high-security HU83 laser blade, and its encrypted immobiliser will not accept a key that has not been electronically married to the car.

Lock City is a mobile auto locksmith with the PSA/Stellantis software to read the security PIN from the BSI and code a fresh key at the roadside. We cut the correct VA2 or HU83 blade on-site, programme keyless proximity fobs as well as blade-and-remote keys, and cover spares and all-keys-lost on car or van — no towing, no dealer delay, and every Citroën key replacement and key programming job guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Monday to Friday, 8am–5:30pm.

Know Your Citroën Key

Citroën Key Systems Explained

Citroën sits inside PSA — now Stellantis — sharing its key architecture with Peugeot and the DS sub-brand it spun off (the DS3, DS4 and DS5 all began life as Citroëns before DS became a marque in its own right). The dividing line is platform and age: older PSA cars on the VA2 blade and Hitag2 chip, versus the newer EMP2/CMP generation that runs from the C1 city car up through the C3, C3 Aircross and C4 to the C4 Cactus and the larger C5 Aircross SUV.

Blades: VA2 and HU83

  • VA2: the older external-cut blade on the C1, earlier C3 and many Berlingo vans.
  • HU83: the newer high-security internal-cut laser blade used across most cars from roughly the 2010s on [verify against your VIN].

Transponders and the BSI immobiliser

  • Older Citroëns use Hitag2 (ID46) transponders. The immobiliser is run by the BSI (body control unit), and its security PIN can usually be read by OBD — which is why most are roadside-programmable rather than a dealer job.
  • Newer EMP2/CMP cars (recent C3, C4, C3 Aircross and C4 Cactus) move to more secure AES chips; that step tracks the PSA-to-Stellantis era [verify against your VIN].

Keyless proximity and the ë-C4

  • The crossover and SUV models — C3 Aircross, C4, C4 Cactus and the larger C5 Aircross — offer keyless entry and start on higher trims, and the electric ë-C4 shares the same proximity system as the petrol and diesel C4. These need current software and the correct smart-key blank; a keyless all-keys-lost takes longer than a spare.
  • Citroën’s comfort heritage — the Airbump body panels on the C4 Cactus and the “Advanced Comfort” seats and suspension — does not change the key job, but it marks out the trims most likely to carry keyless proximity.

The C1 is the odd one out

  • The C1 was built with Toyota at the Kolín plant and is closely related to the Toyota Aygo (and Peugeot 108) — a simpler, cheaper city-car key system than the rest of the range.

Note: the VA2-to-HU83 change and the PSA-to-Stellantis AES cut-over vary by model, trim and build date [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your registration and we will confirm the blade, chip and software before we set out — no invented prices.
