Citroën Key Programming and VA2 vs HU83 Keys Explained

Citroën Key Programming and VA2 vs HU83 Keys Explained

If you have searched for a Citroën key and hit terms like “VA2”, “HU83” or “Hitag”, you have run into the two questions that decide the whole job: which blade does the car use, and which chip is inside the key. Get those two right and a Citroën key is straightforward; get them wrong and the key will not fit, will not turn, or will open the doors but never start the engine. Here is the plain-English version, whether you drive a C1, C3, C4, C3 Aircross or C4 Cactus.

VA2 vs HU83 — the blade (the mechanical layer)

  • VA2: the older, external-cut Citroën/Peugeot blade — the cuts are milled along the edges of the key. Common on earlier C2/C3/C4-era cars and budget models.
  • HU83: the newer high-security blade used across the modern range — a more intricate cut that needs the correct decoding and cutting equipment.

The two are not interchangeable: a VA2 blank will not work in an HU83 lock and vice versa. Which one your Citroën uses depends on the model and build date, and the VA2-to-HU83 change did not land on the same date for every model [verify against your VIN]. On a keyless Citroën the blade is the small emergency key hidden inside the fob, used only if the fob battery dies.

Hitag2 vs AES — the transponder (the immobiliser layer)

Cutting the blade is only half the story. Inside every modern Citroën key is a transponder chip that has to answer the car’s immobiliser, and the chip generation decides how the key is programmed:

  • Hitag2 (ID46): the long-serving PSA chip on Citroëns from roughly the mid-2000s to the late 2010s — well understood and, on most models, programmable by OBD.
  • Hitag AES: the more secure chip on the newest Citroëns (current C3, new C4 and their keyless fobs), which needs up-to-date software and the correct blank — older tooling cannot authenticate to it.

That generation split is the same story that runs across the whole group, and it is why “which year is your Citroën” matters as much as “which model” — our PSA-versus-Stellantis guide explains why the 2021 merger and the platform changes behind it can change your key entirely.

The BSI and the security PIN

Like Peugeot, Citroën manages the immobiliser through the BSI — the Built-in Systems Interface, the central body-control unit. To code a key, our dealer-level software talks to the BSI over the diagnostic port and, using the car’s security PIN, authorises the new key’s identity. On most Citroëns the PIN can be read or calculated by OBD, so we establish it at the roadside rather than sending you to a dealer. No BSI conversation, no working key — which is precisely why a plain key-cutting shop cannot programme one.

What this means model by model

  • C1: the city-car sibling of the Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo, built on a Toyota platform — its key and chip differ from the mainstream Citroën range, so it is worth confirming separately.
  • C3 & C4: span the VA2-to-HU83 change and the Hitag2-to-AES change across their generations — the exact key depends on the year.
  • C3 Aircross & C4 Cactus: the newer crossovers; more likely HU83 and, on later cars, the secure AES chip.

Spare key vs all-keys-lost

If you still have a working key, a spare is the easy job — the car opens and starts, and we code the new key alongside it. Lost every key and it becomes all-keys-lost, where the PIN has to be established and a fresh key built from nothing. Our Citroën all-keys-lost guide covers that in detail.

The honest cost picture

A basic spare for an older C1 or C3 is at the cheaper end; a secure AES key for a current C3 or new C4, or any all-keys-lost, costs more because of the part and the time. We will not print a made-up price — it depends on your exact car and key type. Send us your registration and we will confirm the cost before we travel.
