Citroën C4 Keys: Types & What You Need
The C4 changed sharply across its generations, so knowing which one you have drives both cost and the type of key we bring:
C4 Gen 1 (2004–2010) & Gen 2 (2010–2018)
- Blade: VA2 external-cut blade.
- Transponder: Hitag2 (ID46) chip.
- Remote: flip (switchblade) remote on most trims; keyless entry & go offered on higher Exclusive trims later in Gen 2.
- All-keys-lost: programmed by OBD at the roadside.
C4 Gen 3 (2020–present, incl. ë-C4 electric)
- Blade: newer HU83 high-security profile (emergency blade inside the fob).
- Key: keyless proximity smart fob common on this Stellantis-era car; petrol, diesel and the fully electric ë-C4 share the same key system.
- Transponder: more secure AES-generation chip.
- Security: like any keyless car, worth a Faraday pouch and disciplined spare-key storage; re-code after any theft so a missing fob is dead.
Note: the PSA-to-Stellantis split means the VA2→HU83 and flip→keyless cut-overs vary by trim and build date [verify against your VIN]. Give us your reg and we will confirm the exact key and software before we travel.

My Citroën C4 is keyless — can you still make a new key?
Yes. The current Stellantis-era C4 (and the electric ë-C4) use an HU83 keyless proximity smart fob, and we carry both the blanks and the current software to programme one to your car at the roadside, including keyless all-keys-lost.
Can you replace an older C4 flip key at the roadside?
Yes. The Gen 1 and Gen 2 C4 use a VA2 flip key with a Hitag2 chip, which we cut and code on-site by OBD. Whether you have an older flip key or a new keyless fob, we can sort it in a single visit.
My keyless C4 fob was stolen — is the car at risk?
Potentially — a stolen keyless fob can start the car. We can programme a new fob and de-register the stolen one so it will no longer unlock or start the C4. See our stolen car keys service.
Does the electric ë-C4 use a different key to the petrol C4?
No — the ë-C4 shares the same keyless smart-key system as the petrol and diesel Gen 3 C4, so there is no difference in how we programme it. If you have lost the key to an ë-C4, we treat it exactly like any other current C4.
How much does a C4 key cost to replace?
It depends on the generation: an older VA2 flip key is the cheaper tier, while a newer HU83 keyless smart fob and any all-keys-lost job cost more because of the part and the programming. Send us your registration and we will confirm the exact price before we travel.
