Peugeot Key Programming: What’s Involved (208, 308, 2008, 3008 and More)

A Peugeot key is not something a high-street cutter can simply copy. Whichever model you drive — 208, 308, 2008, 3008, 5008 or 108 — the key carries a transponder that has to be electronically coded to your specific car before the engine will start. This guide explains what Peugeot key programming really involves, why the model and year matter so much, and what decides whether it is a quick job or a bigger one.

Get past the jargon and every Peugeot key job comes down to four things: the blade that turns in the lock or hides inside the fob, the transponder chip that answers the immobiliser, the remote or proximity electronics that lock and unlock the car, and the car’s security system that has to be persuaded to trust a new key. On a Peugeot that security system has a name — the BSI.

The BSI: the brain that has to accept your key

On Peugeot (and its Citroën siblings) the immobiliser is managed by the BSI — the Built-in Systems Interface, the central body-control unit. When we programme a key, our dealer-level software talks to the BSI through the car’s diagnostic port and tells it to trust the new key’s unique electronic identity. Nothing gets coded without going through the BSI, which is exactly why a plain key-cutting machine cannot start your car — it can shape the metal, but it cannot have that conversation.

The security PIN

Every Peugeot has a security PIN (sometimes called a pre-code) tied to the car. The programming software needs that PIN to authorise a key change with the BSI. The good news on most Peugeots is that the PIN can be read out or calculated by OBD with the right equipment, so we can usually establish it at the roadside rather than sending you to a dealer. The PIN matters most in an all-keys-lost, where there is no working key to fall back on.

VA2 vs HU83 blades — the mechanical layer

  • VA2: the older external-cut Peugeot/Citroën blade, common on earlier 207/307-era cars and budget models.
  • HU83: the newer high-security blade found across the modern range — a more complex cut that needs the right decoding and cutting kit.

On a proximity (keyless) Peugeot the blade is the small emergency key hidden inside the fob, used only if the fob battery dies. Which blade your car uses depends on the model and build date, and the VA2-to-HU83 change did not happen on the same day for every model [verify against your VIN]. Our Citroën guide to VA2 vs HU83 keys goes deeper on the two blade profiles, and they apply to Peugeot in exactly the same way.

Hitag2 vs AES chips — why the generation decides the job

  • Older Peugeots (roughly 2005–2018): use the Hitag2 (ID46) transponder — well understood and, on most models, straightforward to programme by OBD.
  • Newer Peugeots (the current 208, 2008, 3008, 5008 and 308): move to the more secure Hitag AES chip, which needs current software and the correct key blank — older tooling simply cannot authenticate to it.

This is why “can you programme a Peugeot key” is really a question of which Peugeot. It is also the heart of the PSA-versus-Stellantis year split that catches a lot of owners out — the same badge, a few years apart, can be a completely different key job.

Spare key vs all-keys-lost

If you still have one working key, adding a spare is the simpler job: the car already opens and starts, and we code the new key alongside the existing one. If every key is gone it becomes all-keys-lost, where the PIN has to be established and a fresh key coded from scratch — longer and dearer. Our Peugeot all-keys-lost guide covers that harder case, and if your car is keyless our i-Cockpit proximity-key guide is the one to read.

What it costs — honestly

A basic spare transponder key for an older 208 or 308 sits at the cheaper end; a secure AES proximity key for a current 3008 or 5008, or any all-keys-lost, costs more because of the part and the time involved. We will not print a fabricated figure here — it depends on your exact car and key type. Tell us your registration and we will confirm the price before we travel, with no surprises.
