Peugeot All Keys Lost: Getting Back on the Road Without the Dealer

Losing every key to your Peugeot — or having them stolen — feels like a crisis, especially if the car was only ever supplied with one key. But an all-keys-lost Peugeot is a job we do regularly, and in the overwhelming majority of cases we do it where the car sits: your driveway, a car park, the roadside. You do not need to pay to recover it to a dealer. Here is exactly what is involved and why it differs from cutting a simple spare.
Why all-keys-lost is harder than a spare
When you still have one working key, adding a spare is straightforward — the car opens, starts, and already trusts an existing key. All-keys-lost removes every one of those advantages: there is no key to open the doors, no key to start the engine, and nothing the immobiliser currently trusts. It all has to be re-established from scratch, which is why it takes longer and costs more.
The BSI and the security PIN
On a Peugeot the immobiliser is governed by the BSI (the Built-in Systems Interface, the central body-control unit), and every car has a security PIN stored against it. To code a brand-new key with no working key present, that PIN has to be established — read out or calculated by OBD with dealer-level equipment. Once the BSI accepts the PIN, it will let us write a new key’s identity into the car. Establishing the PIN is the specialist heart of a Peugeot all-keys-lost, and it is why a general locksmith with only a cutting machine cannot do this work. The BSI and PIN are explained more fully in our Peugeot key programming guide.
What happens at the roadside, step by step
- Non-destructive entry: we get into the car without drilling or breaking glass, so there is no damage to the vehicle.
- Establish the security PIN: using Peugeot dealer-level software and the car’s diagnostics, we read or calculate the PIN the BSI needs.
- Cut the blade: we cut the VA2 or HU83 blade — or the emergency blade inside a proximity fob — to your car.
- Code the new key to the BSI: the key’s electronic identity is written into the immobiliser so the car trusts it.
- Test and hand over: the key locks, unlocks and starts the engine before we leave.
Older Hitag2 vs newer AES — the generation still decides the job
For older Hitag2 (ID46) Peugeots — many 208, 308 and 2008 cars up to around 2018 — this is well-trodden ground. For the newer secure Hitag AES cars — the current 208, 2008, 3008 and 5008 — it needs current software and the correct key blank, and if your car is keyless it is a proximity fob rather than a flip key. That is the PSA-versus-Stellantis split in action: the model alone does not tell us the job, the year does [verify against your VIN]. If your Peugeot is keyless, our i-Cockpit proximity-key guide is the companion to this one.
First — are you sure the key is actually lost?
It is worth ruling out the cheaper explanations before assuming all-keys-lost. If the key is physically in your possession but the car will not read it, you may just have a flat fob battery or a key that has stopped responding — neither of which is an all-keys-lost. Our Peugeot key programming guide covers those. All-keys-lost only applies when every key is genuinely gone.
If the keys were stolen
A lost key and a stolen key are handled differently. If yours were stolen, the missing key can in principle still start the car — so as well as coding a new key we make sure the old one is dealt with. See our stolen car keys service alongside the lost keys one, particularly on keyless models where relay theft is a risk.
The honest cost picture
An all-keys-lost costs more than a spare because of the new key, the PIN work and the time — and a secure AES proximity key on a newer Peugeot costs more than an older Hitag2 flip key. We will not quote a fabricated figure here: the price depends on your exact car and key type, so tell us your registration and we will confirm it before we travel. What we can promise is no towing bill and no dealer wait on top.
