Peugeot i-Cockpit Keyless Entry: Replacing a Lost Proximity Key

Modern Peugeots feel effortless — walk up with the key in your pocket, the doors unlock, press the button and drive. That is Peugeot’s keyless entry and start (sometimes badged “Keyless Entry & Drive”), offered across the i-Cockpit generation of the 208, 2008, 3008 and 5008. It is brilliant until the proximity key is lost, stolen or simply stops working — and then a lot of owners discover that a smart fob is a very different thing to replace than an old-fashioned key.
One quick point of accuracy first: i-Cockpit is Peugeot’s cabin design — the compact steering wheel, the raised digital instruments and the central touchscreen. Keyless entry is a separate option that tends to appear on the same higher trims, which is why the two get spoken about together. If your Peugeot has that cockpit and you never take a key out of your pocket, this guide is for you.
What a proximity key actually is
A Peugeot proximity key is a sealed smart fob with three jobs: it broadcasts a short-range signal so the car detects it as you approach and touch the handle, it carries a secure transponder that answers the immobiliser, and it holds a small emergency blade inside for the door lock if its battery ever dies. On the current range that transponder is the secure Hitag AES type — which is exactly why it needs up-to-date software and the correct smart-key blank to replace, not the generic fob a market stall might sell you.
“My key has stopped working” — check this first
- The car no longer detects the fob as you approach, and the buttons have gone dead — most often a flat fob coin-cell (commonly a CR2032, but check yours) rather than a failed key.
- You can usually still get in with the emergency blade hidden in the fob, and start the car by holding the fob against the marked spot in the cabin, then pressing start with your foot on the brake.
- If a fresh battery restores everything, you never needed a new key at all.
If a new coin-cell does not fix it, or the fob is cracked or water-damaged, the key itself may be worn and need replacing and re-coding. That overlaps with our wider Peugeot key programming guide, which explains how a key is coded to the BSI.
Replacing a lost proximity key
If the fob is genuinely lost, not just flat, you need a new smart key coded to your car. Where you still have a second working fob, that is a spare-key job — quicker, because the car already opens and starts. If it was your only key, you are into all-keys-lost, which needs the security PIN and a fresh key coded from scratch. Either way we do it at the roadside with Peugeot dealer-level software — no recovery to a dealer. Our Peugeot all-keys-lost guide walks through that scenario step by step.
Stolen key, or worried about relay theft?
Keyless cars are a known relay-theft target: thieves amplify the fob’s signal from inside your house to open and start the car on the driveway. If your proximity key has been stolen, the missing fob can in principle still start the car, so as well as coding a new key we can make sure the old one is dealt with — see our stolen car keys service. To reduce the risk generally, keep the fob in a Faraday (signal-blocking) pouch, store your spare well away from the front of the house, and consider an aftermarket immobiliser.
Which Peugeots this applies to
- 208 & 2008 (2019-on): keyless entry and start offered on higher trims; secure AES smart fob.
- 3008 & 5008 (2016-on SUVs): keyless common across much of the range.
- 308 (2013-on): keyless offered on higher trims; earlier cars are more often flip-key.
Exact keyless availability varies by trim and build date [verify against your VIN]. Many entry-level i-Cockpit Peugeots still use a conventional flip key rather than a proximity fob, so it is always worth confirming which you actually have — tell us your registration and we will check before we set off.
