Nissan All Keys Lost: Replacing Every Key to Your Nissan

Nissan All Keys Lost: Replacing Every Key to Your Nissan

Losing your last working key to a Nissan is a special kind of stress: the car will not start, and it is not obvious who can actually help. The reassuring part is that all-keys-lost (no working key at all) is a routine job for an auto locksmith — you do not have to have the car recovered to a dealer, and you do not have to buy a new car computer. This guide explains what is involved so you know what to expect.

Why it is harder than making a spare

When you still have one working key, the car is “awake” to a key it already trusts, so adding a spare is quick. With all keys lost, the car trusts nothing — so the whole security system (Nissan’s NATS immobiliser) has to be brought into a state where it will accept a brand-new key from scratch. That is more work, which is why an all-keys-lost job costs more and takes longer than a straightforward spare. It is still very doable at the roadside; it just is not a five-minute job.

What the job involves

  • Prove the car is yours: we ask for ID and proof of ownership (V5C/logbook) before we generate keys to a car — standard practice and your protection too.
  • Get into the car: if it is locked, we gain non-destructive entry — no drilling, no broken glass. See our locked-out and lost-key service.
  • Cut a new blade: the Nissan NSN14 emergency/mechanical blade is cut to your locks by decoding them or to a key code.
  • Read the BCM PIN: the security PIN in the Body Control Module is the key that unlocks the whole process — with dealer-level kit we read it from the car, which is the step ordinary key-cutters cannot do.
  • Programme a fresh key to NATS: the new Intelligent Key (or transponder key on older models) is registered to the immobiliser via the OBD port, then tested end-to-end.

One-key households are most at risk

Here is the trap a lot of Nissan owners fall into: plenty of used Qashqais, Jukes and X-Trails are sold with only one Intelligent Key. The day that single key is lost or fails, you are straight into an all-keys-lost job — the most expensive version — with no fallback. If you have only one key, the cheapest insurance you can buy is a programmed spare while you still have a working key. Our Qashqai key programming guide explains that quicker spare-key process.

Is it definitely lost — or just not detected?

Before you commit to all-keys-lost, rule out the simple stuff. If the key is in your hand but the dash says “Key not detected”, that is usually a flat fob battery, not a lost key — see our I-Key not detected guide and battery replacement guide. And if a key was stolen rather than mislaid, our stolen car keys service covers disabling the missing key so it can no longer start the car.
