Lost your Nissan X-Trail key, or had a smart fob stolen? On a seven-seat family SUV that does the nursery run, the dog walks and the towing, being locked out or immobilised is more than an inconvenience — it grinds the whole household to a halt, and a keyless SUV is a theft target too.
A main dealer will want the X-Trail recovered, an appointment you may wait days for, and a bill stacking the fob, the coding and the transport. A generic locksmith cannot programme it — the X-Trail runs Nissan’s NATS immobiliser with a BCM and security PIN, and its Intelligent Key needs the right software and blanks that most simply do not carry.
Lock City fixes both the access and the security. As a mobile Nissan-capable locksmith we carry the dealer-level software and the correct Intelligent Key blanks to code a new X-Trail key at the roadside. Lost a keyless fob to theft? We can programme a fresh key and disable the missing one so it can no longer start the car. See our lost key and stolen key services, or call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.
Nissan X-Trail Keys: Types & What You Need
The X-Trail moved firmly to the Intelligent Key with the T32, so the generation matters for both cost and security advice:
X-Trail T31 (2007–2014)
- Blade: NSN14 blade.
- Key: a bladed remote key with a transponder (Hitag2 / ID46, NATS) on most cars; the Intelligent Key offered on later, higher-spec trims.
- All-keys-lost: programmed by OBD at the roadside with the BCM/PIN drawn from the vehicle.
X-Trail T32 (2014–2022)
- Key: Intelligent Key proximity smart fob standard across most of the range, with an NSN14 emergency blade hidden inside the fob.
- Electronics: Renault–Nissan alliance architecture; five- and seven-seat versions all use the same key system.
X-Trail T33 (2022–present)
- Key: Intelligent Key proximity as standard on a newer, more secure (AES-era) system; e-POWER hybrid drivetrain common.
- Security: as a keyless SUV it is a relay-theft target — we recommend a Faraday pouch, keeping the spare away from the front door, and re-coding after any theft so the old fob is dead.
Note: the exact bladed-vs-Intelligent-Key split on the T31, and T33 chip revisions, vary by trim and build date [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the key type before we set off.

Depending on the generation and trim, the Nissan X-Trail is fitted with the remote key with a separate blade and the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

Nissan X-Trail Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
My Nissan X-Trail is keyless — can you still make a new key?
Yes. The T32 and T33 X-Trail use a Nissan Intelligent Key smart fob, and we carry both the blanks and the current software to programme one to your car at the roadside, including all-keys-lost. See our Nissan key programming service.
My keyless X-Trail fob was stolen — is the car at risk?
Potentially, yes — a stolen keyless fob can start the car, and keyless SUVs are a relay-theft target. We can programme a new Intelligent Key and de-register the stolen one so it will no longer unlock or start the X-Trail. See our stolen car keys service.
My X-Trail says “No key detected” — do I need a new fob?
Often it is just a flat CR2032 battery in the Intelligent Key. You can usually still start the car using the backup procedure (holding the fob to the marked spot and pressing start). If a new battery does not fix it, we test the fob and the BCM before recommending a replacement.
How do I stop my keyless X-Trail being stolen?
Keep the fob in a Faraday (signal-blocking) pouch, store the spare away from doors and windows, and consider an aftermarket immobiliser. After any theft or lost fob, have the key re-coded so the missing one is disabled. See our stolen car keys service for how we help.
Can you programme an older bladed X-Trail key at the roadside too?
Yes. The T31 X-Trail uses a bladed remote key with a transponder, which we cut and code on-site by OBD. Whether you have an older bladed key or a new Intelligent Key, we can sort it in a single visit.
