Regain Entry Into Your Nissan Leaf

Lost your Nissan Leaf key, or seeing “Key ID Incorrect” / “No key detected”? The Leaf is one of Bristol and Bath’s most popular EVs — and being electric does not change one thing: without a recognised Intelligent Key the car will not power up to “READY”, so a dead or lost fob leaves you going nowhere.

A main dealer will want the Leaf recovered, an appointment days away, and a bill stacking the smart fob, the coding and the transport. A general locksmith usually cannot help either: the Leaf runs Nissan’s NATS immobiliser with a BCM and security PIN, and its Intelligent Key needs the right software and blanks — being an EV does not make it a simpler job.

Lock City is a mobile auto locksmith comfortable with EVs. We come to you with the dealer-level Nissan software and the correct Intelligent Key blanks, and code a new key to your Leaf at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. Every Leaf key replacement and key programming job is guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.

Know Your Key

Nissan Leaf Keys: Types & What You Need

The Leaf has always been keyless, using the Nissan Intelligent Key — there is no traditional ignition barrel, just a push-button start authorised by the fob. The generation tells us the exact blank and software:

Leaf ZE0 / AZE0 (2011–2017)

  • Key: Nissan Intelligent Key (proximity) smart fob with an NSN14 emergency blade hidden inside, for the door if the fob battery dies.
  • Start: push-button power-up to “READY” — the fob must be detected, exactly like the “I-Key not detected” issue on the petrol Nissans.
  • Immobiliser: NATS with a BCM and security PIN.

Leaf ZE1 (2017–present)

  • Key: updated Intelligent Key smart fob on a newer, more secure (AES-era) system; e-Pedal and ProPILOT trims common.
  • All-keys-lost: roadside-programmable with current software and the right kit; keyless AKL takes a little longer than adding a spare.

The Leaf jobs we see most

  • A “dead key” that is really just a flat CR2032 fob battery — you can usually still start using the backup procedure (holding the fob to the marked spot and pressing start).
  • One-fob households where a single lost smart key becomes an instant all-keys-lost.

Note: ZE1 chip revisions vary by build date [verify against your VIN]. Being an EV does not change the immobiliser side — tell us your reg and we will confirm the fob and software before we set off.

Which key does a Nissan Leaf use?

Depending on the generation and trim, the Nissan Leaf is fitted with the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

Nissan Leaf Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

Can you programme a key for an electric Nissan Leaf?

Yes. The Leaf uses the Nissan Intelligent Key just like the petrol models, and we carry the blanks and dealer-level software to programme one to your EV at the roadside — including all-keys-lost. Being electric does not change the immobiliser or the key side of the job. See our Nissan key programming service.

My Leaf won’t go to “READY” and says no key detected — is the fob dead?

Most often it is just a flat CR2032 battery in the Intelligent Key. You can usually still power the car up using the backup procedure (holding the fob against the marked spot and pressing the start button), and get in with the hidden emergency blade. If a new battery does not fix it, we test the fob and the BCM before recommending a replacement.

My Leaf came with only one key — should I get a spare?

Strongly recommended. Many Leafs were delivered with a single Intelligent Key, which means losing it turns a simple spare into a costlier all-keys-lost job. A programmed spare now is cheaper and saves you being stranded later. See our spare key service.

I’ve lost every key to my Leaf — can you still help?

Yes. All-keys-lost is a job we handle on the Leaf as well as the petrol Nissans: we generate and code a fresh Intelligent Key to your NATS immobiliser at the roadside, drawing the security PIN from the vehicle where needed. See our lost car keys service.

Is my keyless Leaf at risk of relay theft?

Like any keyless car, yes — so keep the Intelligent Key in a Faraday pouch and the spare away from the front door. If a fob is lost or stolen, we can programme a new one and disable the old. See our stolen car keys service.
