Jaguar Smart Key Programming: Replacing Lost or Stolen Keyless Fobs

Lost or had a Jaguar keyless fob stolen? A modern Jaguar smart key is a secure, encrypted device, so replacing one is a proper programming job — but it is entirely doable, and on most models we do it at the roadside. Here is how Jaguar smart-key programming works and what to expect.
Jaguar shares its keyless-security architecture with Land Rover — the same JLR secure-module approach — so the principles here apply across the XE, XF, F-Pace, E-Pace and the rest of the current range.
What a Jaguar smart key is
On a current Jaguar, the smart key and the car authenticate each other cryptographically through a secure control module (the KVM/RFA family) [verify against your VIN]. Practically, that means:
- Keyless entry and start. The car unlocks and starts with the fob near it — no button press needed.
- A hidden emergency blade. Most fobs contain a mechanical blade for the door if the fob battery dies [verify against your model].
- No simple copying. The key cannot be cloned off; a replacement must be created and authenticated to your specific car with current dealer-level equipment.
Older Jaguars differ. Ford-era Jaguars used more conventional transponder keys [verify against your VIN], which are a cheaper, simpler job than a current smart key. Your registration tells us which you have.
Spare fob vs all-keys-lost
- Adding a spare (working key present): quicker and cheaper — the system can accept an extra key while an existing one is present.
- All-keys-lost (no working key): a new fob is created and authenticated from scratch — more involved, and on the newest models potentially dealer-restricted [verify against your VIN].
If your Jaguar came with a single fob, a programmed spare now is far cheaper than an all-keys-lost later — the same logic we set out in our all-keys-lost guide.
Replacing a LOST fob
A lost fob is not just an access problem — it can still start your car. So the job is two parts: programme a new fob, and re-code the car so the missing one is de-registered. We create and authenticate a fresh smart key to your Jaguar, then reset the immobiliser data so the lost fob is dead. Our lost car keys service covers exactly this.
Replacing a STOLEN fob
A stolen fob is a live security risk — someone can unlock and drive your car, and Jaguars, like all keyless vehicles, are relay-theft targets. Report the theft for a crime reference number, keep the car somewhere secure, and get it re-coded urgently so the stolen fob can no longer unlock or start it. Our stolen car keys service handles the new fob and disables the old one in the same visit. It is worth reading our relay-theft protection guide to stop it happening again.
What to expect on the day
- Confirm the car: give us your registration (and VIN if you have it) so we bring the right fob and software.
- Non-destructive access if you are locked out, before any programming.
- Programme and authenticate the new smart key to your Jaguar with dealer-level equipment.
- Re-code and test: disable any missing fob, then check entry, start and locking before we leave.
On cost: a Jaguar smart fob and its programming sit in the higher price tier, and all-keys-lost costs more than a spare — we do not publish a fixed figure because it depends on your exact model. Send us your reg and we will confirm the price before we travel.
