Range Rover & Land Rover Keyless Relay Theft: How to Protect Your Car

Keyless Range Rover and Land Rover models are among the most relay-theft targeted vehicles in the UK — high value, high demand, and fitted with the very passive-entry system that thieves exploit. If you own a modern Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Evoque, Discovery or Defender, understanding how the attack works is the first step to stopping it.
This is not scaremongering. It is why insurers loaded premiums on certain JLR models, why JLR issued security updates, and why a stolen keyless fob is a genuine security problem rather than just an inconvenience. The good news: a few disciplined habits and a couple of low-cost measures close most of the gap.
How relay theft actually works
Modern JLR keyless entry uses a passive system — the car and the smart key talk to each other over a short-range radio signal, so the car unlocks and starts when the key is simply near it. You never press a button. Relay theft abuses that convenience:
- Two thieves, two devices. One stands near your house with a relay amplifier that picks up the faint signal from your key indoors (on a hall table, in a pocket by the front door).
- The signal is relayed. A second device by the car receives that boosted signal, tricking the car into thinking the genuine key is present.
- The car opens and starts. The vehicle unlocks and the engine will start — the whole thing can take under a minute and makes almost no noise.
Key point: relay theft does not clone or copy your key. It borrows your key’s live signal. That is why keeping the key’s signal contained is so effective — no signal reaching the outside means nothing to relay.
The practical measures that actually work
In rough order of value for money:
- Use a Faraday pouch or box. A signal-blocking pouch for everyday carry and a Faraday tin or box at home stops the key broadcasting. Test it: with the key inside, it should not unlock the car. Put the spare in one too.
- Move keys away from doors and windows. The relay amplifier needs to reach the key. Keys kept deep inside the house, upstairs, away from the front wall, are much harder to capture.
- Turn off the key’s wireless when possible. Some later JLR keys have a motion-sensor sleep mode that disables the signal when the key is still — worth enabling if your key supports it [verify against your key/model].
- Add a physical deterrent. A quality steering lock or wheel clamp is visible, slow to defeat, and often enough to send a thief elsewhere.
- Consider an aftermarket immobiliser or tracker. A Thatcham-approved aftermarket immobiliser that requires a driver tag or PIN blocks a relayed start entirely; a tracker aids recovery. On the highest-risk models these can also help with insurance.
- Keep JLR software up to date. JLR has released security updates for some models. Ask your dealer whether any keyless-security update applies to your VIN.
What to do if your car IS targeted or a keyless fob goes missing
A lost or stolen keyless fob can still start your car — so it must be treated as a security matter, not just a replacement. If a key is stolen, or you suspect someone has access to one:
- Report the theft to the police and get a crime reference number for insurance.
- Get the vehicle re-coded, not just re-keyed. The critical step is having the immobiliser data reset so the missing fob is de-registered and can no longer unlock or start the car. A brand-new key on its own does not disable the old one.
- Move the car to a secure location and use a physical lock until it is re-coded.
This “programme a new key and kill the old one” job is exactly what our stolen car keys service covers. If the key is simply lost rather than stolen, our lost car keys service handles the same re-code so you are not driving a car a spare fob can still open.
