Regain Entry Into Your Land Rover Defender

Lost, snapped or stolen your Land Rover Defender key? Whether it is a hard-worked classic Defender on the farm or a desirable new Defender on the drive, an immobilised one stops the job — and the new Defender is a high-value theft target, so a missing keyless fob is a security issue too.

The two Defenders could hardly be more different under the skin. A classic Defender uses a simple transponder key; the new Defender (L663) is a fully keyless, KVM-based JLR. A general locksmith cannot programme the new one, and the dealer route means recovery, a wait and a stacked bill. You need someone who covers both eras.

That is Lock City. We come to you with the right key — a classic transponder blade or a new keyless smart fob — and the dealer-level software to code it to your Defender at the roadside, no towing. Lost a keyless fob to theft? We programme a fresh key and disable the missing one. See our lost and stolen key services, or call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.

Land Rover Defender Keys: Types & What You Need

The Defender name covers two completely different key systems. Which one you have decides everything about the job and the security advice:

Classic Defender (to 2016)

  • Key: later Td5 and Puma-engined classic Defenders use a bladed key with a transponder; the very oldest Defenders had simple mechanical keys with no immobiliser [verify against your VIN].
  • All-keys-lost: a comparatively straightforward transponder job with the right tooling; a favourite for cheap, reliable spares.
  • Common jobs: worn barrels, snapped blades and simple spares for a working vehicle.

New Defender (L663, 2020–present)

  • Key: fully keyless smart proximity tied to the Keyless Vehicle Module (KVM); the waterproof Activity Key wristband is a popular option for exactly this kind of outdoor vehicle.
  • Variants: 90, 110, 130 and the P400e plug-in hybrid all share the same keyless architecture.
  • Security: a desirable, high-value keyless JLR and therefore a relay-theft target — Faraday pouch, spare-key discipline and re-coding after any theft all matter.
  • All-keys-lost: high-value dealer-level programming; a genuine specialist job.

Note: exactly which classic Defender has a transponder (and which is a plain mechanical key) depends on age and spec [verify against your VIN]. Give us your reg and we will confirm the key type and the job before we travel.

Land Rover Defender FAQs

Land Rover Defender Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

Can you cut a spare for a classic Land Rover Defender?

Yes. Later classic Defenders use a bladed key with a transponder, which we cut and programme at the roadside — a comparatively straightforward and affordable job. The very oldest Defenders may have a simple mechanical key with no chip; tell us the year and we will confirm.

My new Defender is keyless — can you make a new smart key?

Yes. The new Defender (L663) uses a JLR keyless smart proximity fob tied to the Keyless Vehicle Module, and we carry the blanks and dealer-level software to code one at the roadside, including all-keys-lost. As a high-value target we will also help you secure it — see our stolen car keys service.

What is the Activity Key on a Defender?

It is JLR’s waterproof wristband key, popular on the Defender so you can lock the fob in the car and head off outdoors. If you have lost or damaged one, or need the main smart fob replaced or a spare programmed, tell us your reg and we will confirm what your Defender supports.

I’ve lost all the keys to my Defender — can you help?

Yes. Whether it is a classic transponder Defender or a keyless new Defender, we treat it as an all-keys-lost job and code a fresh key to your vehicle at the roadside with dealer-level software. See our lost car keys service.

How do I stop my new Defender being stolen?

Keep the keyless fob in a Faraday (signal-blocking) pouch, store the spare away from doors and windows, and consider an aftermarket immobiliser, tracker or physical lock. Relay theft extends the fob’s signal from your home to the vehicle, so blocking that signal is the most effective single step — and after any lost or stolen fob, have the vehicle re-coded.
