Lost, snapped or stolen your Land Rover Freelander key? The Freelander is the affordable, practical Land Rover — but an immobilised one still goes nowhere, and finding a locksmith who properly covers the older Freelander key system is not as easy as it should be.
A dealer will want the car recovered, an appointment days out, and a bill covering the key, the cutting and the coding. A high-street key cutter cannot help either — the Freelander runs a transponder immobiliser, so an uncoded key will open the door but never start the engine.
Lock City knows the Freelander. We come to you with the correct HU101 blank and transponder, cut the blade on-site and code the key to your immobiliser at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait, and every Freelander key replacement and key programming job guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.
Land Rover Freelander Keys: Types & What You Need
The Freelander predates JLR’s keyless era, so it is a more traditional bladed-transponder job — good news for cost. Knowing which Freelander you have tells us the blade, chip and software to bring:
Freelander 1 (1997–2006)
- Key: a bladed key with a transponder on immobiliser-equipped cars; earlier examples are simpler. The Freelander 1 spans Rover-era and later electronics [verify against your VIN].
- All-keys-lost: handled with the right tooling; tell us the year so we bring the correct parts.
Freelander 2 (L359, 2006–2014)
- Blade: HU101 laser blade (Ford-era, from the Ford ownership period).
- Key: bladed remote with a Ford-era transponder (Texas 4D-family); most Freelander 2s are conventional key-and-remote rather than keyless.
- All-keys-lost: programmed at the roadside with dealer-level software — a comparatively straightforward, affordable JLR job.
- Common jobs: worn or snapped blades, dead remote batteries mistaken for a failed key, and simple spares.
The shift to keyless
- Unlike the Evoque and Discovery Sport that replaced it, the Freelander is largely a pre-keyless model — which is why its keys are cheaper and quicker than the smart fobs on newer JLRs. If you later move to an Evoque or Discovery Sport, expect a very different (keyless) key job.
Note: the exact transponder and immobiliser details vary across the Freelander 1’s long, Rover-to-Ford-era production run [verify against your VIN]. Give us your reg and we will confirm the key type before we set off.

Depending on the generation and trim, the Land Rover Freelander is fitted with the bladed transponder key and the remote key with a separate blade. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

Land Rover Freelander Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
How much is a replacement Land Rover Freelander key in Bristol?
The Freelander is one of the more affordable Land Rovers to key because it uses a conventional bladed transponder remote rather than a keyless smart fob. A spare is the cheapest tier; an all-keys-lost costs a little more. Give us your registration and we will quote the exact figure before we travel.
Can you programme a Freelander key at the roadside?
Yes. Both the Freelander 1 and Freelander 2 are programmed on-site with our dealer-level software — no recovery to a dealer and no days-long wait. See our key programming service.
My Freelander key turns but the buttons do nothing — do I need a new key?
Usually not. This is nearly always a flat remote battery or a worn micro-switch rather than a failed transponder. We can replace the battery or repair the remote for a fraction of a new key, and re-cut or re-shell a worn blade.
I’ve lost every key to my Freelander — can you still help?
Yes. All-keys-lost is a routine Freelander job for us: we cut a fresh HU101 blade and code the key to your immobiliser at the roadside, so the car starts before we leave. See our lost car keys service.
Is the Freelander keyless like a Range Rover Evoque?
No — the Freelander is largely a pre-keyless model with a conventional bladed remote, which is exactly why its keys are cheaper and quicker to sort than the keyless smart fobs on the Evoque and Discovery Sport that replaced it. Tell us your reg and we will confirm what your Freelander uses.
