Regain Entry Into Your Land Rover Discovery
Lost, snapped or stolen your Land Rover Discovery key? The Discovery is a serious family and towing 4x4, so an immobilised one strands the caravan, the horsebox and the school run alike — and if yours is a keyless Discovery 5, a missing fob is a security issue as well as an access one.
The JLR dealer route means recovery, an appointment days out, and a bill covering the key, the coding and the transport. A general locksmith cannot programme it — the Discovery spans an older Ford-era transponder system on the Discovery 3/4 and a modern encrypted keyless system on the Discovery 5, and each needs the right dealer-level tooling.
Lock City covers both. We come to you with the correct blade, transponder or keyless fob and the dealer-level software to code it to your Discovery at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. Lost a keyless fob to theft? We programme a fresh key and disable the missing one. See our lost and stolen key services, or call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.
Land Rover Discovery Keys: Types & What You Need
The Discovery straddles the shift from a bladed transponder key to full keyless, so the generation decides both the job and the security advice:
Discovery 3 (L319, 2004–2009) & Discovery 4 (2009–2016)
- Blade: HU101 laser blade.
- Key: bladed remote with a Ford-era transponder (Texas 4D-family); later Discovery 4 trims offered keyless entry [verify against your VIN].
- All-keys-lost: programmed with dealer-level software; the bladed remotes are a more straightforward job than the modern keyless fobs.
- Common jobs: worn or snapped blades, and battery/immobiliser faults where the car cranks but will not start.
Discovery 5 (L462, 2017–present)
- Key: keyless smart proximity as standard, tied to the Keyless Vehicle Module (KVM); waterproof Activity Key wristband offered on some trims.
- Security: as a keyless JLR the Discovery 5 is a relay-theft target — Faraday pouch, disciplined spare storage, and re-coding after any theft all matter.
- All-keys-lost: high-value dealer-level programming; a genuine specialist job.
Note: the keyless availability on late Discovery 4 trims and the exact Discovery 5 features vary by spec and build date [verify against your VIN]. Give us your reg and we will confirm the key type and the job before we travel.
Land Rover Discovery Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
Can you replace a Discovery 3 or 4 key without going to a dealer?
Yes. The Discovery 3 and 4 use a bladed remote with a Ford-era transponder, which we cut and code to your immobiliser at the roadside with dealer-level software — no recovery to a JLR dealer. Worn and snapped blades are among the most common Discovery jobs we do.
My Discovery 5 is keyless — can you make a new smart key?
Yes. The Discovery 5 uses a JLR keyless smart proximity fob tied to the Keyless Vehicle Module, and we carry the blanks and dealer-level software to programme one at the roadside, including all-keys-lost. As it is a relay-theft target, we will also talk you through securing it — see our stolen car keys service.
My Discovery cranks but won’t start — is it the key?
It can be. A de-synced transponder or an immobiliser fault will let the engine crank but not fire, which is easy to mistake for a mechanical problem. We diagnose the immobiliser and re-code the key on-site. See our key programming service.
I’ve lost all the keys to my Discovery — can you help?
Yes. Whether it is a bladed Discovery 3/4 or a keyless Discovery 5, we treat it as an all-keys-lost job and code a fresh key to your car at the roadside with dealer-level software. See our lost car keys service.
Is my keyless Discovery 5 at risk of relay theft?
Like any keyless JLR, yes. Keep the fob in a Faraday (signal-blocking) pouch, store the spare away from doors and windows, and consider an aftermarket immobiliser or tracker. After any lost or stolen fob, have the car re-coded so the missing key is disabled.

Which key does a Land Rover Discovery use?
Depending on the generation and trim, the Land Rover Discovery is fitted with the remote key with a separate blade and the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.
