Regain Entry Into Your Range Rover

Lost your Range Rover key, or had a keyless fob stolen? The full-size Range Rover is JLR’s flagship — and one of the most-stolen vehicles in the UK. An immobilised Range Rover is bad enough; a missing keyless fob is a genuine security emergency, because it can still start a car that thieves actively hunt for.

The dealer route is painful on a car this valuable: recovery to a JLR dealer, an appointment days away, and a bill that stacks the smart key, the coding and the transport. A general locksmith cannot touch it — the Range Rover’s encrypted keyless system, tied to the Keyless Vehicle Module (KVM), needs current dealer-level JLR software and the correct fob that ordinary tooling will never authenticate.

Lock City handles JLR smart keys at exactly this level. We come to you, supply the right keyless fob and code it to your Range Rover at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. Lost a fob to theft? We programme a fresh key and disable the missing one so it can no longer start the car. This is the centrepiece of what we do: see our stolen key and lost key services, or call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.

Range Rover Keys: Types & What You Need

The Range Rover is the single most theft-targeted vehicle we deal with, so on this model security leads and the key type follows. Tell us the generation (or your reg) and we will confirm the fob, the software and the security steps:

Security first — the UK’s most-stolen SUV

  • Faraday pouch, always: the keyless fob transmits continuously and thieves relay that signal from your home to the drive. A signal-blocking pouch defeats the most common attack outright.
  • A lost or stolen fob is an emergency: it can still start a car criminals actively target. We re-code the Range Rover so the missing fob is dead — do not delay this.
  • Layer your defences: keep the spare well away from the front of the house, and add an aftermarket immobiliser, tracker or wheel clamp — insurers have demanded exactly this on some Range Rovers.

Range Rover L322 (2002–2012)

  • Key: earlier cars used a bladed remote with a transponder; later L322 models moved to a JLR keyless smart fob [verify against your VIN].
  • Blade: HU101-family blade on the transponder-key cars.

Range Rover L405 (2013–2022)

  • Key: keyless smart proximity as standard, tied to the KVM — this is the generation most associated with the relay-theft wave.
  • All-keys-lost: high-value dealer-level programming; a genuine specialist job.

Range Rover L460 (2022–present)

  • Key: newest keyless architecture with more relay-resistant technology, plus the waterproof Activity Key option on some cars [verify against your VIN].
  • Security: improved, but a high-value target regardless — on the very newest JLR builds all-keys-lost can be more dealer-restricted, and we will tell you honestly before we travel.

Note: the L322 bladed-to-keyless cut-over and the newest security/AKL restrictions vary by build date [verify against your VIN]. Give us your reg and we will confirm the fob type and the job first.

Which key does a Range Rover use?

Depending on the generation and trim, the Range Rover is fitted with the remote key with a separate blade and the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

Range Rover FAQs

Range Rover Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

My Range Rover is keyless — can you programme a new smart key?

Yes. The Range Rover uses an encrypted JLR keyless proximity fob tied to the Keyless Vehicle Module, and we carry the blanks and dealer-level software to code one at the roadside, including all-keys-lost. On the newest L460 builds AKL can be more dealer-restricted — we will confirm honestly before we travel.

My Range Rover fob was lost or stolen — how urgent is it?

Very. The Range Rover is one of the UK’s most-stolen vehicles, and a missing fob can still start it. Treat it as a security emergency: we programme a new fob and de-register the missing one so it can no longer unlock or start the car. See our stolen car keys service.

How do I stop my Range Rover being stolen by relay attack?

Keep the fob in a Faraday (signal-blocking) pouch, store the spare well away from doors and windows, and layer on an aftermarket immobiliser, tracker or physical lock. Relay theft extends the fob’s signal from inside your home to the car, so blocking that signal is the most effective single step — and insurers increasingly expect it on a Range Rover.

I’ve lost all the keys to my Range Rover — can you still help?

Yes. All-keys-lost is a high-value job we handle: we generate and code a fresh smart fob to your car with dealer-level JLR software, so you are not paying for recovery. On the newest builds we will confirm feasibility first. See our lost car keys service.

What is the Activity Key on a Range Rover?

It is JLR’s waterproof wristband key, offered on some newer Range Rovers so you can lock the fob in the car and go running or swimming. If you have lost or damaged one, or want the main smart fob replaced or a spare programmed, tell us your reg and we will confirm what your car supports.
