Land Rover All Keys Lost: What It Involves and What to Expect

Lost every key to your Land Rover or Range Rover? It is stressful — the car will not start, and a modern JLR is not something you can jump onto a bus about. The reassuring part: all-keys-lost (AKL) is a job we do regularly, and knowing what it involves in advance takes most of the worry out of it.
This guide walks through what actually happens, roughly how long it takes, when it might have to be a main dealer, and the one step people forget — the security side.
What “all keys lost” actually means
All-keys-lost simply means there is no working key present for the car to learn a new one from. That changes the job compared with adding a spare:
- With a working key, the system can be told to accept an additional key relatively easily — a quicker, cheaper job.
- With no working key, a new key has to be created and authenticated to the car’s secure system from scratch, which is more involved and takes longer.
Why it costs more: you are paying for the smart-key part itself, the specialist software and time to authenticate it, and — on lost-and-stolen jobs — the security reset. It is a genuine specialist task, not a copy.
What to expect on the day
- We confirm your exact vehicle first. Give us the registration and, ideally, the VIN. The generation and platform decide the key, the software and whether it is roadside or dealer work.
- Non-destructive access if needed. If you cannot even get into the car, we gain entry without damage before any key work begins.
- A new smart key is supplied and programmed. We create and authenticate a fresh key to your car’s secure module using dealer-level equipment, at your home, work or the roadside.
- We test everything. Lock, unlock, keyless entry and start are all checked before we leave — the car goes nowhere until it starts on the new key.
Timing: a straightforward JLR all-keys-lost is often a single visit, but a smart-key AKL takes noticeably longer than a simple spare — plan for it to be the main job of the appointment rather than a five-minute call [verify against your VIN].
When it may have to be a main dealer
We are honest about the newest models. On the latest JLR platforms, some all-keys-lost work is restricted to the main dealer network [verify against your VIN]. If your car is one of those, we will tell you straight away rather than waste a visit — and we will explain what the dealer route looks like. For most Land Rover and Range Rover models on the road, however, all-keys-lost is something we can do on-site.
The step people forget: security
If your keys were stolen — or you simply do not know where they are — a replacement is only half the job. Any missing keyless fob can still unlock and start the car. The essential step is re-coding the immobiliser so the missing keys are de-registered and dead.
That is why we treat a theft differently from a genuine loss. If the keys were taken, our stolen car keys service includes disabling the old keys; keyless JLR cars are relay-theft targets, so our relay-theft protection guide is worth a read too. If they are just lost, our lost car keys service does the same re-code so a found key can never be used against you.
