Fiat All Keys Lost (500, Panda, Punto, 500X)

Fiat All Keys Lost (500, Panda, Punto, 500X)

Losing the last working key to a Fiat is more stressful than it should be: the car will not start, and it is not obvious who can help. The reassuring part is that all-keys-lost (no working key at all) is a routine job for a mobile auto locksmith — you do not need to have the car recovered to a Fiat dealer, and you certainly do not need a new car computer. This guide covers what is involved across the 500, Panda, Punto and 500X.

Why all-keys-lost is harder than a spare

When you still have one working key, the car is “awake” to a key it already trusts, so adding a spare is quick. With all keys lost, the car trusts nothing — so Fiat’s immobiliser (Fiat Code) has to be brought into a state where it will accept a brand-new key from scratch. That is more work, which is why an all-keys-lost job costs more and takes longer than a straightforward spare. It is still very doable at the roadside; it just is not a five-minute job.

The Fiat key systems you might have

The four models here do not all use the same generation of security, which is why we ask for your reg before quoting:

  • 500 & Panda (petrol): SIP22 blade-and-remote keys. Earlier cars use an early Megamos-family transponder; later cars moved to the more secure Hitag2/ID46 family widely used across Fiat and the Stellantis group [verify against your VIN].
  • Punto (Grande Punto / Punto Evo): also a SIP22 blade key with a transponder immobiliser — one of the more straightforward Fiat all-keys-lost jobs on the older cars.
  • 500X: a newer car built on the FCA/Stellantis “small-wide” platform (shared with the Jeep Renegade), with a more modern, more secure key system and keyless proximity entry on higher trims — a bigger job than an old Punto.

The pattern across the range is the industry norm: the older the car, the simpler and cheaper the all-keys-lost; the newer and more keyless it is, the more involved. But all of them are doable at the roadside with the right software.

What the job involves

  • Prove the car is yours: we ask for ID and proof of ownership (V5C/logbook) before we generate keys to a car — standard practice, and your protection too.
  • Get into the car: if it is locked, we gain non-destructive entry — no drilling, no broken glass. See our locked-out and lost-key service.
  • Cut a new SIP22 blade: cut to your locks by decoding them or to a key code.
  • Read the immobiliser PIN/security data: the security code the car holds is what unlocks the whole process — with dealer-level kit we read it from the vehicle, the step ordinary key-cutters cannot do.
  • Programme a fresh key: register the new key (or keyless fob on a 500X) to the immobiliser via the OBD port, then test it end-to-end.

One-key Fiats are most at risk

Here is the trap a lot of Fiat owners fall into: plenty of used 500s, Pandas and Puntos are sold with only one key. The day that single key is lost or fails, you are straight into an all-keys-lost — the most expensive version — with no fallback. If you have only one key, the cheapest insurance you can buy is a programmed spare while the working key still exists. Our Fiat 500 key programming guide explains that quicker spare-key process.

Is it definitely lost — or just not working?

Before you commit to all-keys-lost, rule out the simple stuff. If the key is in your hand but the remote has gone dead or the car will not recognise it, that is very often a flat CR2032 fob battery, not a lost key — a cheap fix. And if a key was stolen rather than mislaid, our stolen car keys service covers disabling the missing key so it can no longer start the car, which matters most on a keyless 500X.
