Regain Entry Into Your Peugeot 208

Lost, snapped or stolen your Peugeot 208 key? It stops everything — the school run, the commute, the shift you cannot be late for. And because the 208 is one of Britain’s best-selling superminis, a lot of owners find out the hard way that a modern 208 key is not a five-minute cut-a-copy job.

Take the 208 to a main dealer and you are usually looking at recovering the car (a 208 is immobilised without a coded key), a booking days away, and a bill that stacks the key, the programming and the recovery. A general locksmith with a cutting machine cannot help either: the 208’s BSI immobiliser will not accept a key that has not been electronically married to the car.

Lock City is a mobile auto locksmith carrying the dealer-level software and the right Hitag2 / AES transponders for your exact 208. We come to you, cut the VA2 or HU83 blade on-site and code the key to your immobiliser at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. Every 208 key replacement and key programming job is guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Monday to Friday, 8am–5:30pm.

Peugeot 208 Keys: Types & What You Need

Knowing which 208 you have tells us exactly which key, chip and tool the job needs — and whether it is a quick spare or a full all-keys-lost. Here is the real breakdown by generation:

208 Gen 1 (A9, 2012–2019)

  • Blade: VA2 external-cut blade.
  • Transponder: Philips/NXP Hitag2 (ID46, PCF7936/7941) — programmed by OBD at the roadside.
  • Remote: two- or three-button flip (switchblade) remote; a plain transponder key on the most basic Access trims.
  • All-keys-lost: the BSI PIN is usually readable by OBD, so AKL is done on-site — no modules removed.

208 Gen 2 (P21, 2019–present, CMP platform)

  • Blade: HU83 high-security laser blade.
  • Key: flip remote on entry trims; keyless proximity entry (with the i-Cockpit cabin) on Allure, GT and GT Premium, using a more secure Hitag AES chip.
  • e-208: the all-electric e-208 uses the same smart-key architecture as the petrol car.
  • All-keys-lost: roadside-programmable with current software; keyless AKL takes longer than adding a spare.

The three jobs we see most on the 208

  • A worn flip-blade spring that no longer folds out or turns cleanly in the door.
  • A “dead key” that is really just a flat CR2032 fob battery — a two-minute fix, not a new key.
  • Immobiliser de-sync after a flat-battery jump or a battery change, where the car cranks but will not fire.

Note: the VA2-to-HU83 cut-over and exact keyless-vs-flip split depend on the build date and trim [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the key type before we come out.

Which key does a Peugeot 208 use?

Depending on the generation and trim, the Peugeot 208 is fitted with the flip (switchblade) remote key and the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

  • Flip (switchblade) remote key

Peugeot 208 FAQs

Peugeot 208 Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

How much is a replacement Peugeot 208 key in Bristol?

It depends on the generation and whether it is a spare or all-keys-lost. A spare flip key for a Gen 1 (2012–2019) 208 is the cheapest tier; a keyless smart key for a Gen 2 GT or an all-keys-lost job costs more because of the fob and the programming involved. Give us your registration and we will quote the exact figure before we travel.

Can you programme a 208 key at the roadside, or does it have to go to Peugeot?

At the roadside. The vast majority of 208s — both generations — are programmed on-site by OBD with our dealer-level software. There is no need to recover the car to a dealer or wait days for an appointment.

My 208 key still turns but the buttons do nothing — do I need a new key?

Usually not. On the 208 this is almost always a flat CR2032 fob battery or a worn micro-switch, not a failed transponder. We can replace the battery or repair the remote for a fraction of a new key, and re-shell a worn flip blade.

I’ve lost every key to my 208 — can you still help?

Yes. All-keys-lost is one of our most common 208 jobs. We generate and code a brand-new key to your immobiliser at the roadside, so you are not paying for recovery. See our lost car keys service for how it works.

Does a keyless i-Cockpit 208 need different equipment to a normal key?

Yes. The keyless Gen 2 208 uses a secure Hitag AES smart fob and a proximity system, so it needs current software and the correct smart-key blank. We carry both, so we can handle keyless GT and Allure 208s as well as standard flip-key cars.
