Lost your Ford Kuga key, or had a keyless fob stolen? On a family SUV that does the nursery run, the dog walks and the weekend away, being locked out or immobilised is more than an inconvenience — it grinds the whole household to a halt.
A main dealer will want the Kuga recovered, an appointment you may wait days for, and a bill that stacks the key, the coding and the transport on top of each other. A generic locksmith cannot programme it at all — and with the Mk3 Kuga, there is an extra sting: keyless SUVs like this are a known relay-theft target, so a stolen or lost keyless fob is also a security problem, not just an access one.
Lock City fixes both. As a mobile Ford specialist we carry the dealer-level software and the correct smart-key blanks to code a new Kuga key — flip or keyless — to your immobiliser at the roadside. Lost a keyless fob to theft? We can programme a fresh key and disable the missing one so it can no longer start the car. Ford Kuga Keys: Types & What You Need
The Kuga’s key system changed sharply with the current model, so the generation matters a lot for both cost and security advice:
Kuga Mk1 (2008–2012) & Mk2 (2013–2019)
- Blade: HU101 laser blade.
- Key: HU101 flip (switchblade) remote with an ID63 transponder; keyless offered on higher Mk2 trims (Titanium X).
- All-keys-lost: programmed by OBD at the roadside.
Kuga Mk3 (2020–present)
- Key: keyless smart proximity as standard on most trims, using a Hitag Pro (ID49) fob.
- Variants: petrol, self-charging and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) — all use the same smart-key architecture.
- Security: the keyless system is a relay-theft target. We recommend a Faraday pouch, keeping the spare well away from the front door, and re-coding after any theft so the old fob is dead.
Note: keyless availability on Mk2 trims varies by spec [verify against your VIN]. Our Ford PATS immobiliser guide explains how the Kuga’s security system decides what a replacement key involves.

Ford Kuga Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
My Ford Kuga is keyless — can you still make a new key?
Yes. The Mk3 Kuga uses a Hitag Pro keyless smart fob, and we carry both the blanks and the current software to programme one to your car at the roadside. We handle keyless all-keys-lost as well as spares.
My keyless Kuga fob was stolen — is the car at risk?
Potentially, yes — a stolen keyless fob can start the car, and keyless SUVs are a relay-theft target. We can programme a new fob and de-register the stolen one so it will no longer unlock or start the Kuga. See our stolen car keys service.
Does the plug-in hybrid Kuga (PHEV) use a different key?
No — the Kuga PHEV uses the same keyless smart-key system as the petrol and self-charging versions, so there is no difference in how we programme it. If you have lost the key to a PHEV, we treat it exactly like any other Mk3 Kuga.
How can I stop my keyless Kuga being stolen?
Keep the fob in a Faraday (signal-blocking) pouch, store the spare away from doors and windows, and consider an aftermarket immobiliser. After any theft or lost keyless fob, have the key re-coded so the missing one is disabled. Our guide to preventing Ford theft has more.
Can you programme an older Kuga flip key at the roadside too?
Yes. Mk1 and Mk2 Kugas use an HU101 flip key with an ID63 transponder, which we cut and code on-site by OBD. Whether you have an older flip key or a new keyless fob, we can sort it in a single visit.
