Spare keysRegain Entry Into Your Ford Focus
A dead or damaged Ford Focus key leaves you going nowhere. Whether the flip blade has finally given up, a key has been lost, or the last one was stolen, an immobilised Focus is a car you cannot start and cannot afford to be without.
The dealer route means recovering the Focus, waiting for an appointment and paying for the key, the coding and the transport. A high-street key cutter cannot rescue you either — the Focus runs Ford’s PATS immobiliser, so an uncoded key will open the door but never crank the engine. You need someone who actually knows the Focus key system generation by generation.
That is Lock City. We are a Ford-focused mobile locksmith carrying the dealer-level software, the correct ID63 transponders and the HU101 blanks your Focus needs. We come to you, repair or replace the key and code it to your immobiliser on-site — no towing, no dealer delay, and every Focus key replacement guaranteed. Phone 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.
Ford Focus Keys: Types & What You Need
The Focus has run through three very different key systems. Telling us the generation (or your reg) means we arrive with exactly the right blank, chip and software:
Focus Mk2 (2004–2011)
- Blade: the tail end of the Tibbe (FO21) two-track key on early cars, moving to the HU101 laser blade on facelift models.
- Transponder: Texas 4D63 (40-bit, later 80-bit).
- Remote: integrated three-button remote head or separate remote plus transponder key.
Focus Mk3 (2011–2018)
- Blade / key: HU101 flip (switchblade) key, ID63 80-bit transponder.
- The classic Focus job: the flip-switch spring fails and the blade will not stay out or fold in. We re-shell the key and transfer the electronics rather than sell you a whole new key.
Focus Mk4 (2018–present)
- Remote: flip key as standard, with keyless smart proximity (Hitag Pro) offered on Titanium X, Vignale, ST-Line and ST.
- All-keys-lost: roadside-programmable with current software.
Note: the Mk2 Tibbe-to-HU101 change and the Mk4 keyless options vary by build date and trim [verify against your VIN]. Our guide to common Ford lock and ignition problems covers the Focus flip-key fault in detail.

Depending on the generation and trim, the Ford Focus is fitted with the bladed transponder key, integrated remote-head key and the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

Ford Focus Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
Why does my Ford Focus flip key keep failing?
It is the single most common Focus key fault. The Mk3 flip (switchblade) key has a small spring and micro-switches that wear out, so the blade stops springing out or the buttons stop working. We can re-shell the key and transfer your existing electronics and blade — much cheaper than a brand-new coded key.
Can you replace a Focus key without going to a Ford dealer?
Yes. We cut and programme Focus keys at the roadside for Mk2, Mk3 and Mk4 cars using dealer-level software. There is no need to recover the car or book into a dealer. See our Ford key programming service.
My early Focus has a strange two-track key — can you copy it?
That is the Tibbe (FO21) key used on earlier Mk2 Focus cars. Yes, we can cut and, where a transponder is fitted, programme it. Tell us the year and we will confirm whether yours is a Tibbe or the later HU101 laser key before we come out.
I’ve lost all the keys to my Focus — what happens now?
We treat it as an all-keys-lost job: we generate a fresh key, cut the blade and code it to your immobiliser at the roadside, so the Focus starts before we leave. More detail on our lost car keys page.
Does a keyless Ford Focus cost more to replace?
Generally yes. A keyless (KeyFree) Mk4 Focus uses a Hitag Pro smart fob, which is a more expensive part than a standard flip key and takes longer to programme. We carry both types, so whichever Focus you have, we can sort it in one visit.
