Regain Entry Into Your Ford Ka
Lost, snapped or stolen your Ford Ka key? The Ka has always been the cheap, cheerful runabout — but that hides a real trap, because over its life a “Ford Ka key” has been three completely different keys from three different manufacturers.
Take the Ka to a main dealer and you are usually looking at a booking days away and a bill you would not expect on a small car. A high-street key cutter can copy a plain mechanical Ka key, but the moment there is a transponder involved it cannot help — the immobiliser will not accept a key that has not been electronically coded to the car. And the biggest catch is that the middle-generation Ka is not a Ford key at all.
Lock City knows exactly which Ka is which. We come to you, cut the right blade on-site and, where a transponder is fitted, code the key to your immobiliser at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. Every Ka key replacement and key programming job is guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Monday to Friday, 8am–5:30pm.
Ford Ka Keys: Types & What You Need
With the Ka, the single most important thing is which Ka you have — because the generation decides not just the key, but which carmaker’s system it is. Tell us the year (or your reg) and we arrive with exactly the right blade, chip and software:
Ka Mk1 (1996–2008) — based on the Fiesta Mk4
- Blade: the Tibbe (FO21) two-track key that the earliest Kas shared with the Fiesta Mk4 and Puma of the era.
- Transponder — the catch: the earliest Mk1 Kas are purely mechanical with NO transponder, so a plain cut key will start them. Later Mk1 cars gained Ford PATS with a transponder chip [verify against your VIN] — so two Kas of the same shape can need very different work.
- All-keys-lost: a mechanical Ka just needs a cut key; a PATS Ka needs the transponder coding to the immobiliser.
Ka Mk2 (2008–2016) — built on the Fiat 500 platform
- The key disambiguation point: this Ka was built alongside the Fiat 500 in Poland and is a Fiat underneath. It uses a Fiat key blade and a Fiat immobiliser (ID48 transponder) — NOT a Ford key or a Ford system.
- What that means for you: we programme a Ka Mk2 as a Fiat, with Fiat tooling and blanks. If a locksmith turns up with only Ford Ka kit for a 2008–2016 Ka, they have brought the wrong equipment.
- All-keys-lost: handled the Fiat way — often needs the immobiliser PIN read, so tell us the year up front.
Ka+ (2016–2019) — back to a Ford key
- Blade / chip: the Ka+ returns to Ford’s own system with an HU101 blade and a Ford PATS transponder, so it is programmed as a Ford again.
- Remote: remote central locking on higher trims; a plain transponder key on base cars.
Bottom line: which Ka you have decides the key — a mechanical or PATS Ford on the Mk1, a Fiat key and immobiliser on the Mk2, and a Ford HU101 key again on the Ka+. Give us the reg or the year and we will confirm the exact key, chip and price before we travel.

All keys lostFord Ka Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
How do I know which Ford Ka key I need?
It comes down to the year, and it matters more on the Ka than almost any other car. A 1996–2008 Ka Mk1 uses a Tibbe key and may or may not have a transponder; a 2008–2016 Ka Mk2 is built on the Fiat 500 platform and needs a Fiat key and immobiliser; a 2016–2019 Ka+ goes back to a Ford HU101 key. Give us your registration and we will confirm which one you have before we travel. See our car key replacement service.
Is the 2008–2016 Ford Ka really a Fiat?
For key purposes, yes. The second-generation Ka was built alongside the Fiat 500 and uses a Fiat key blade and a Fiat immobiliser (ID48), not a Ford PATS system. We programme it as a Fiat, so it is a different job — and a different key — to any other Ka. See our car key programming service.
My old Ford Ka key has no buttons and no chip — can you just copy it?
Very likely, yes. The earliest Ka Mk1 cars are purely mechanical with a Tibbe (FO21) key and no transponder, so a straight cut key will unlock and start them. We will check whether your Ka has PATS first — later Mk1 cars did gain a chip — but if it is a true mechanical Ka, it is one of the cheapest keys we cut.
Can you do an all-keys-lost on a Ford Ka at the roadside?
Yes, on all three generations — but the method differs. A mechanical Mk1 just needs a cut key; a PATS Mk1 or a Ka+ has the transponder coded by OBD; a Fiat-based Mk2 is done the Fiat way. Tell us the year and we will bring the right kit. See our lost car keys service.
Why is a Ka+ key different again from the Ka before it?
Because Ford changed platforms. The Ka+ (2016–2019) is a Ford again, using an HU101 blade and a Ford PATS transponder, whereas the Ka it replaced was Fiat-based. So a Ka+ is programmed as a Ford, like a Fiesta of the same era — different from both earlier Kas.
