Regain Entry Into Your Kia Sorento

Lost, snapped or stolen your Kia Sorento key? On a large seven-seat SUV that carries the whole household, an immobilised car you cannot start is a serious problem — and keyless SUVs are a relay-theft target, so a missing smart fob is a security issue as well as an access one.

The dealer route means recovering the Sorento, waiting for a slot and paying for the fob, the coding and the transport. A general locksmith usually cannot help either — the keyless Sorento needs current software, the right secure smart-key blanks and the car’s immobiliser PIN for all-keys-lost, which most simply do not carry.

Lock City comes to your home, work or the roadside with the dealer-level software and correct blanks to cut and code a Sorento key — flip or keyless — on the spot, reading or looking up the PIN where all keys are lost. Lost a keyless fob to theft? We can programme a new key and disable the old one so it can no longer start the car. See our lost and stolen key services, or call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.

Kia Sorento Keys: Types & What You Need

Kia is part of the Hyundai Motor Group and shares its key systems with Hyundai’s big SUVs (like the Santa Fe). The Sorento’s key stepped up with the current model, so the generation drives both cost and security advice:

Sorento Mk3 (UM, 2015–2020)

  • Key: folding flip remote on lower trims; keyless smart proximity common on higher KX trims, using a Hyundai-Kia secure chip.
  • All-keys-lost: programmed by OBD at the roadside using the immobiliser PIN.

Sorento Mk4 (MQ4, 2020–present)

  • Key: keyless smart proximity as standard on most trims, with a folding emergency blade inside the fob, using a secure AES chip.
  • Variants: petrol, diesel, full-hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) all use the same smart-key architecture.
  • Security: as a high-value keyless SUV, the Sorento is a theft target — a Faraday pouch, disciplined spare-key storage and re-coding after any theft all matter.

Note: exact blade profile, chip revision and keyless availability by trim vary with build date [verify against your VIN]. Give us your reg and we will confirm the exact key and whether a PIN read is needed before we set off.

Kia Sorento FAQs

Kia Sorento Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

My Kia Sorento is keyless — can you still make a new key?

Yes. The current (2020-on) Sorento uses a keyless smart fob, and we carry both the blanks and the current software to programme one to your car at the roadside — including keyless all-keys-lost using the car’s security PIN.

My keyless Sorento fob was stolen — is the car at risk?

Potentially, yes — a stolen keyless fob can start the car, and keyless SUVs are a relay-theft target. We can programme a new fob and de-register the stolen one so it no longer unlocks or starts the Sorento. See our stolen car keys service.

Does the hybrid or plug-in Sorento use a different key?

No — the petrol, diesel, hybrid and PHEV Sorento all use the same keyless smart-key system, so there is no difference in how we programme it. If you have lost the key to a hybrid Sorento, we treat it exactly like any other Mk4 car.

How much does a Sorento key cost to replace?

It depends on the generation and key type: an older folding flip key is the cheaper tier, while a keyless smart fob and any all-keys-lost job (which needs the security PIN) cost more. Send us your registration and we will confirm the exact price before we travel.

How do I stop my Sorento being stolen via the keyless system?

Keep the fob in a Faraday pouch, store the spare away from doors, and consider an aftermarket immobiliser or tracker. After any lost or stolen fob, have the key re-coded so the missing one is disabled.
