Kia belongs to the Hyundai Motor Group and shares its key systems with Hyundai’s hybrids and EVs (like the Kona and Ioniq). The Niro has been keyless-focused from the start, so up-to-date software and the security PIN matter more here than on an older Kia:
Niro Mk1 (DE, 2016–2022)
- Key: keyless smart proximity common across the range, with a folding emergency blade hidden inside the fob.
- Powertrains: self-charging hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and the all-electric e-Niro — all share the same smart-key architecture.

Does the electric Niro EV / e-Niro use a different key?
No — the hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full-electric Niro all use the same keyless smart-key system, so there is no difference in how we programme it. If you have lost the key to an EV Niro, we treat it exactly like any other Niro.
My Niro won’t detect the smart key — is the fob dead?
Often it is just a flat CR2032 battery in the smart fob. You can usually still start the car by holding the fob against the marked spot and using the start button, and get in with the hidden emergency blade. If a new battery does not fix it, we can test and, if needed, replace the fob.
My keyless Niro fob was stolen — is the car at risk?
