Spare keysRegain Entry Into Your VW Up
Lost, snapped or stolen your VW Up key? The Up is a brilliant little city car, but an immobilised one is still a car you cannot start — and being stranded for a key is just as frustrating in a small car as a big one.
The good news is that the Up is one of the simpler VAG cars to key: it sits on the older small-car platform it shares with the Škoda Citigo and SEAT Mii, not the component-protected MQB system of the Golf. That usually makes it a quicker, more affordable job — but a main dealer will still want the car recovered and booked in, and a high-street key cutter cannot programme the transponder to the immobiliser.
Lock City comes to you with the right HU66 blanks, transponders and dealer-level software for the Up. We cut and code the key on-site — no towing, no dealer wait, and every Up key replacement and key programming job guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.
VW Up Keys: Types & What You Need
The Up is refreshingly straightforward compared with the rest of the VW range. Telling us the trim (or your reg) means we arrive with exactly the right blank, chip and software:
VW Up (2011–2023)
- Blade: HU66 internal-cut VAG blade.
- Transponder: Megamos Crypto (ID48) / Hitag2 — the older, simpler VAG immobiliser, not MQB component protection.
- Remote: a plain transponder key on base trims; an integrated remote (fixed-head or flip) on higher trims such as High Up and the electric e-Up.
- Platform: the New Small Family (NSF) platform, shared with the Škoda Citigo and SEAT Mii — so all three are essentially the same key job.
- All-keys-lost: OBD-programmable at the roadside; because it is not MQB, this is usually quicker and cheaper than an all-keys-lost on a Golf or Tiguan.
Note: exactly which remote type your Up carries depends on the trim and whether it was optioned with central locking upgrades [verify against your VIN]. The e-Up (electric) uses the same key system. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the key type before we come out.

VW Up Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
Is a VW Up key cheaper to replace than a Golf key?
Usually, yes. The Up sits on the older, simpler VAG platform rather than the component-protected MQB system, so both spares and all-keys-lost are generally quicker and more affordable than the equivalent Golf or Tiguan job. Send us your reg and we will confirm the exact cost.
Can you programme an Up key at the roadside, or does it have to go to VW?
At the roadside. The Up is OBD-programmable with our dealer-level software, so there is no need to recover the car to a dealer or wait for an appointment. See our VW key programming service.
My Up key still turns but the buttons do nothing — do I need a new key?
Usually not. On the Up this is almost always a flat CR2032 fob battery or a worn micro-switch, not a failed transponder. We can replace the battery or repair the remote for a fraction of a new key.
I’ve lost all the keys to my Up — can you still help?
Yes. All-keys-lost on the Up is a straightforward roadside job because it is not on the MQB platform. We generate and code a brand-new key to your immobiliser on-site. See our lost car keys service.
Does the electric e-Up use a different key?
No — the e-Up uses the same HU66 blade and simpler VAG immobiliser as the petrol Up, so we programme it exactly the same way. If you have lost the key to an e-Up, tell us the reg and we will treat it like any other Up.
