Regain Entry Into Your VW Caddy

Lost, snapped or stolen your VW Caddy key? The Caddy is a compact workhorse for trades, couriers and families alike — and being locked out or immobilised means the working day, or the school run, grinds to a stop.

A main dealer will want the Caddy recovered, an appointment days out, and a bill covering the key, the coding and the transport. A high-street key cutter cannot rescue you either — the Caddy runs VAG’s immobiliser, so a cut-only key opens the door but never starts the van. It needs the right software and blank, matched to the generation.

Lock City is a mobile van locksmith carrying the VAG software and HU66 blanks to cut and code a Caddy key at your home, yard or the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. We handle lost keys and spare keys alike, and every job is guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.

VW Caddy Keys: Types & What You Need

The Caddy has run through several VAG generations, and the current Mk5 is a step change. Telling us the model (or your reg) means we bring the right blade, chip and software:

Caddy Mk3 / Mk4 (2004–2020)

  • Blade: HU66 VAG blade in a flip (switchblade) remote on most vans; fixed-head remote or plain transponder key on earlier/base models.
  • Transponder: Megamos (ID48) on earlier vans, secure Hitag on later ones — the classic VAG job.
  • Common jobs: worn flip-key springs and buttons, and dead fob batteries mistaken for a failed key.

Caddy Mk5 (2020–present)

  • Platform: built on VW’s MQB platform, sharing its car-derived MQB key system.
  • Key: HU66-family blade with a secure transponder; keyless entry on higher trims.
  • All-keys-lost: an MQB job — more involved than a simple spare, so current software matters.

Sibling note: the Caddy shares its HU66 / VAG key platform with the VW Transporter, and the Mk5 shares its MQB key system with VW’s cars — unlike the Crafter, whose older version is actually a Mercedes Sprinter.

Note: exact chip generation and keyless availability vary by year and trim [verify against your VIN]. Give us your reg and we will confirm the key and software before we travel. See our van key programming service.

Which key does a VW Caddy Van use?

Depending on the generation and trim, the VW Caddy Van is fitted with the flip (switchblade) remote key and the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

  • Flip (switchblade) remote key
  • Smart proximity (keyless) key
VW Caddy FAQs

VW Caddy Van Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

Can you replace a VW Caddy key without going to a dealer?

Yes. We cut the HU66 blade and code the transponder to your van on-site with dealer-level VAG software, for both older Caddys and the Mk5 (MQB) — no recovery to a dealer. See our van key programming service.

My Caddy flip key won’t spring out or the buttons have died — new key?

Often not. On older Caddys this is usually a worn flip-key spring, worn micro-switches or a flat fob battery, not a failed transponder. We can re-shell the key and transfer your electronics, or replace the battery, for far less than a new coded key.

Is the Mk5 Caddy key different from older ones?

Yes — the Mk5 (2020-on) is built on VW’s MQB platform and uses the newer MQB key system, so it needs current software, especially for all-keys-lost. It shares that system with VW’s cars rather than the older Caddy vans. See our lost keys service for how AKL works.

I’ve lost all the keys to my Caddy — can you help?

Yes. All-keys-lost is a regular Caddy job — we generate and code a fresh key to the van on-site so you avoid recovery costs. On the Mk5 (MQB) it takes a little longer than adding a spare. See our lost keys service.

Can you come to my yard for spare Caddy keys?

Yes. We attend homes, yards and depots to supply and programme spare and replacement Caddy keys, so a single lost key never takes a van off the road. See our replacement van keys service.
