VW Multivan Keys: Types & What You Need
The single most important question for a Multivan is: is it Transporter-based or a T7? The older Multivans are built on the Transporter van platform, while the 2021-on T7 Multivan moved to the car-based MQB platform it shares with the Golf. That changes the blade, the chip and the software — so tell us the generation (or your reg) and we arrive with exactly the right kit.
Multivan T5 / T6 / T6.1 (2003–2021) — Transporter-based
- Blade: HU66 blade, the familiar VW van/car profile.
- Transponder: Megamos-family / Hitag crypto on the VW immobiliser (chip generation varies by year).
- Remote: HU66 flip (switchblade) remote as standard, with Kessy keyless entry and go on higher trims [verify against your VIN].
- All-keys-lost: programmed by OBD at the roadside with VW software.
Multivan T7 (2021–present) — MQB platform, Golf-based
- Underneath: the T7 Multivan is a car-derived MQB vehicle, not a panel-van derivative — so it uses a Golf-style smart key, not the old van key.
- Key: smart proximity keyless entry and push-button start on most trims, with an emergency HU66 blade hidden in the fob; AES-generation chip.
- All-keys-lost: newer MQB immobilisers can require online/component-protection programming — we confirm the exact route by VIN before we travel.
Do not confuse it with the panel van. The Multivan is the passenger people-carrier; the load-carrying Transporter panel van is a separate vehicle with its own page. Give us the reg and we will confirm the exact key, chip and price before we set off.

How do I know which VW Multivan key I need — older T-series or the T7?
It comes down to the generation. A T5, T6 or T6.1 Multivan (up to 2021) is Transporter-based and uses an HU66 flip key or Kessy keyless; the 2021-on T7 Multivan is built on the car-based MQB platform and uses a Golf-style smart key. Is a VW Multivan the same key as a VW Transporter van?
