A VW Transporter off the road is money walking out the door. The T5 and T6 are the choice of trades, couriers and campervan converters across the region — so a lost, stolen or snapped key does not just cost a key, it costs the job and the day’s work.
The dealer route means recovering the van, waiting for a slot and paying for the key, the coding and the transport while your Transporter sits idle. A general locksmith cannot programme it either — the Transporter runs VAG’s immobiliser, so an uncoded key opens the door but never starts the van. And with the classic “why can’t I just get a VW key cut” question, the honest answer is that it needs the right software and blanks.
Lock City is a mobile van locksmith carrying the VAG software and HU66 blanks to cut and code a Transporter key at your yard, depot or the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. We also handle fleet spare keys so a single failure never strands a van. Call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.
VW Transporter Keys: Types & What You Need
The Transporter has run through several VAG immobiliser generations. Telling us the model (or your reg) means we arrive with the right blade, chip and software:
Transporter T5 (2003–2015)
- Blade: HU66 VAG blade in a flip (switchblade) remote on later vans, fixed-head remote or plain transponder key on earlier/base vans.
- Transponder: Megamos (ID48) on earlier vans, moving to Hitag on later T5.1 — the bread-and-butter VAG job.
Transporter T6 (2015–2019)
- Key: HU66 flip remote with a secure Hitag transponder.
- All-keys-lost: programmable with dealer-level VAG software.
Transporter T6.1 (2019–present)
- Keyless: Keyless Entry & Start (Kessy) proximity offered as an option — a more involved job than a standard flip key.
Sibling note: the Transporter shares its HU66 / VAG key platform with the VW Caddy. The VW Crafter is different — the 2017-on Crafter is a MAN TGE van, and the pre-2017 Crafter is actually a rebadged Mercedes Sprinter — so do not assume all VW vans share one key.
Note: exact chip generation and whether Kessy keyless is fitted vary by year and spec [verify against your VIN]. Give us your reg and we will confirm the key and software before we travel. See our van key programming service.

VW Transporter Van Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
Why can’t I just get a VW Transporter key cut at a key bar?
Because cutting the HU66 blade is only half the job — the van’s VAG immobiliser will not start it until the key’s transponder is electronically coded to the van. That needs dealer-level software and the right blank, which a high-street cutter does not have. We do both in one visit. See our van key programming service.
Can you programme a Transporter key at the roadside or depot?
Yes. We cut and code T5, T6 and T6.1 keys on-site at your yard, depot or the roadside — no recovery to a dealer. See our van locksmith solutions.
My T6.1 has keyless entry — can you still make a key?
Yes. The T6.1’s optional Keyless Entry & Start (Kessy) system needs the right proximity fob and current software, both of which we carry. Keyless jobs take a little longer than a standard flip key, especially all-keys-lost.
I’ve lost every key to my Transporter — can you help?
Yes. All-keys-lost is a common Transporter job — we generate and code a fresh key to the van on-site, so you avoid recovery costs. See our lost keys service.
Can you key a fleet of Transporters at our yard?
Yes. We attend yards and depots to supply and programme spare and replacement Transporter keys across a fleet in one visit, so no single lost key takes a van off the road. See our replacement van keys service.
