Regain Entry Into Your VW

Whether you drive a Golf, Polo or Passat, a Tiguan, T-Roc or Touran, a city Up, or a Transporter, Caddy or Crafter van, a lost, stolen or broken VW key stops the day dead — and for a working van it stops the income too.

The dealer route means recovering the car or van (a VW with no coded key is immobilised), an appointment that suits them not you, and a bill covering the key, the programming and the transport. A general locksmith usually cannot help at all: since the MQB platform arrived, VW keys carry component security — Volkswagen Group calls it Komponentenschutz — so a blank that has not been married to your exact vehicle with dealer-level data will unlock the door but never crank the engine. It is genuinely not a cheap copy.

Lock City is a mobile Volkswagen Group specialist. We come to your home, work, yard or the roadside with the dealer-level software, the right HU66 blanks and the component-security data your VW needs, cut and code the key on-site and guarantee it — no towing, no dealer delay. Call 07967 097 899, Monday to Friday, 8am–5:30pm.

Know Your VW Key

VW Key Systems Explained

The VW range spans city cars, hatchbacks and a big van line-up, so the key story is really three stories — the cars, the vans and the odd-one-out city cars. Knowing which yours is tells us whether it’s a quick roadside job or a dealer-level one:

The blade: HU66

  • Almost every modern VW uses the HU66 internal-cut blade (newer cars use a higher-security HU66 variant), cut on a Lishi HU66. A flip key whose spring has failed is the everyday VW repair — we re-shell and transfer your electronics rather than sell a whole new coded key.

The cars: pre-MQB vs MQB

  • Pre-MQB (Golf Mk5/Mk6, older Polo, older Passat): Megamos Crypto / Hitag2 (ID48), OBD-programmable at the roadside — the everyday VAG job.
  • MQB (Golf Mk7 from 2013, Golf Mk8, current Polo, Tiguan, T-Roc): IMMO5 with component protection (Komponentenschutz) and Megamos AES / Hitag AES chips; a new key needs component-security data via dealer-level access, which a generic key cutter can’t do.
  • Golf GTI and R: the hot Golfs almost always carry KESSY keyless-go, so they follow exactly the same all-keys-lost path as any keyless MQB car — there’s no shortcut for the sporty models.

The vans: the real cut-over

  • Transporter T5 and T6, and the older Caddy: HU66 with Megamos/Hitag2 — OBD roadside jobs, just like the pre-MQB cars.
  • T6.1 (2019-on) and the Caddy Mk5 (2020-on): move onto the MQB-era platform and pick up component protection like the cars — a genuinely different, dealer-level job to the T5/T6 that came before [verify against your VIN].
  • Crafter: the current Crafter (2017-on) shares its underpinnings with the MAN TGE and uses its own key architecture, so it doesn’t follow the Transporter pattern — give us the reg and we’ll confirm.

The city cars and keyless

  • up!: the up! sits on the older New Small Family platform for its whole life, so it keeps a simpler pre-MQB key and immobiliser — usually the most straightforward VW to key.
  • KESSY: keyless-go on higher trims uses a proximity smart key; all-keys-lost needs the full security data and takes longer than adding a spare.

Note: the exact pre-MQB/MQB cut-over — especially on the vans — varies by model and build date [verify against your VIN]. Give us your registration and we’ll confirm the key type, chip and whether it’s a roadside or dealer-level job before we travel — no fabricated prices.
