Spare keysRegain Entry Into Your VW T-Roc
Lost your VW T-Roc key or keyless fob? The T-Roc has quickly become one of VW’s most popular crossovers — and, being a modern MQB car, it is one where the old “pop to a key cutter” fix simply does not apply.
The Volkswagen dealer route normally means recovering the T-Roc, waiting for the next free appointment and paying a combined bill for the fob, the coding and the transport. A high-street cutter is a dead end on this MQB crossover — without VAG coding the engine stays immobilised however well the blade is cut.
Lock City keeps its VAG software and stock up to date specifically for cars like the T-Roc. We come to you, supply the right smart key or flip key, cut the HU66 blade and code it to your immobiliser at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait, fully guaranteed. VW T-Roc Keys: Types & What You Need
The T-Roc launched in 2017, so its key system is entirely modern MQB — which is exactly why up-to-date VAG software matters more here than on an older VW:
T-Roc (2017–present) — MQB
- Blade: HU66 internal-cut VAG blade (emergency blade inside the smart fob on keyless cars).
- Platform: MQB with IMMO5 and component protection — the same family as the Golf Mk7/Mk8, SEAT Arona and Škoda Kamiq.
- Transponder: Megamos AES; flip remote on entry trims, keyless KESSY smart proximity common on Design, R-Line and T-Roc R.
- All-keys-lost: roadside-programmable, but only with current software and the component-security data — keyless AKL takes longer than adding a spare.
What we see most on the T-Roc
- One-key households: some T-Rocs were sold with a single smart fob, so a lost key is instantly an all-keys-lost.
- Flat fob batteries mistaken for a failed key — often just a CR2032 swap plus the keyless start procedure.
- Owners surprised that a modern VW key needs component-protection data — the reason it is not a five-minute high-street copy.
Note: exact chip revisions and keyless availability vary by trim and build date [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the software and blank needed before we set off.
The VW T-Roc at a glance
The T-Roc (2017 on, facelifted 2022) is Volkswagen’s A-segment MQB crossover. Most cars ship with a bladed flip remote, with Keyless entry an option higher up the range.
- Blade: HU66 flip remote; Keyless Access optional on R-Line and above [verify against your VIN].
- Cabriolet and R variants exist — tell us the exact trim so we bring the right blank and software.
The T-Roc scenarios we see
T-Rocs come in as style-led buys, including the Cabriolet, where a lost roof-down key on a summer day is a genuine security worry. R-Line owners with Keyless entry make up a chunk of the higher-tier jobs.
- Keyless fob lost with the roof down.
- R-Line proximity key washed in a coat.
- A facelift car needing a matched spare.

Which key does a VW T-Roc use?
Depending on the generation and trim, the VW T-Roc is fitted with the flip (switchblade) remote key and the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.
- Flip (switchblade) remote key
- Smart proximity (keyless) key
VW T-Roc Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
Can you really programme a new VW T-Roc key — it’s a modern car?
Yes. We keep our VAG software and smart-key stock current specifically for recent models like the T-Roc. We can programme keyless KESSY smart fobs and flip keys to a T-Roc at the roadside, including all-keys-lost, with the component-protection data the MQB platform requires.
My T-Roc came with only one key — should I get a spare?
Strongly recommended. Some T-Rocs were delivered with a single smart fob, which means losing it turns a simple spare-cut into a costlier MQB all-keys-lost job. A programmed spare now is cheaper and saves you being stranded later. See our spare key service.
My T-Roc won’t detect the key — is the fob dead?
Often it is just a flat CR2032 battery in the smart fob. You can usually still start the car using the keyless back-up procedure and get in with the hidden emergency blade. If a new battery does not fix it, we can test and, if needed, replace the fob.
How much does a keyless T-Roc smart key cost to replace?
A keyless T-Roc smart fob sits in the higher price tier because the part is more expensive and the MQB programming takes longer than a basic flip key. Send us your registration and we will confirm the exact cost before we travel.
Is the keyless T-Roc at risk of relay theft?
Like any keyless car, yes — so keep the fob in a Faraday pouch and the spare away from the front of the house. If a keyless fob is lost or stolen, we can programme a new one and disable the old. See our stolen car keys service.
