Spare & fleet keysRegain Entry Into Your VW Crafter
A VW Crafter off the road is a big problem for a business. As a large panel van and a common Luton and motorhome base, the Crafter earns its keep every day — so a lost, stolen or snapped key stops deliveries, jobs and income cold.
The dealer route means recovery, a wait for a booking and a bill stacking the key, the coding and the transport. A general locksmith cannot programme it either — but the Crafter has a twist that catches out even some locksmiths: the key system is completely different depending on the year. Get that wrong and someone turns up with the wrong equipment entirely.
Lock City knows the difference. As a mobile van locksmith we identify which Crafter you have, bring the right software and blanks, and cut and code at your yard, depot or the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. We also handle fleet spare keys. Call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.
VW Crafter Keys: Types & What You Need
The single most important thing about a Crafter key is the year. VW changed the entire platform in 2017, and with it the key system — so the model year decides which tools, blanks and software the job needs. This is a genuine differentiator, not a detail:
Crafter pre-2017 (first generation)
- Platform: this Crafter is a rebadged Mercedes Sprinter — built alongside it and sharing Mercedes’ encrypted FBS key system.
- Key: a Mercedes-style key, not a VAG one — so it needs Mercedes FBS tooling, exactly like a Sprinter of the same age.
Crafter 2017-on (second generation)
- Platform: an all-new VW-built van shared with the MAN TGE, using a VW MQB-style key system.
- Key: VAG HU66-family blade with a secure transponder; keyless options on higher trims.
- All-keys-lost: programmable with current VAG/MQB software.
Sibling note: so the pre-2017 Crafter belongs with the Mercedes Sprinter (shared FBS keys), while the 2017-on Crafter belongs with modern VAG vans, not with the VW Transporter’s older platform. Tell us the year and everything else follows.
Note: exact key architecture around the 2017 changeover and keyless availability vary by build date and spec [verify against your VIN]. Give us your reg and we will confirm before we travel. See our van key programming service.

Which key does a VW Crafter Van use?
Depending on the generation and trim, the VW Crafter Van is fitted with the flip (switchblade) remote key, integrated remote-head key and the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

VW Crafter Van Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
Is a VW Crafter key the same as a VW Transporter key?
Not necessarily — and it depends on the year. A 2017-on Crafter uses a modern VAG/MQB key, while a pre-2017 Crafter is actually a rebadged Mercedes Sprinter and uses Mercedes FBS keys. Neither is identical to a Transporter, so the year matters a lot.
My Crafter is older — why does it use a Mercedes key?
Because the pre-2017 Crafter was built with Mercedes and is essentially a rebadged Sprinter, so it shares the Mercedes FBS encrypted key system. We treat it exactly like a Sprinter of the same age. See our Mercedes Sprinter page.
Can you programme a 2017-on Crafter key at the roadside?
Yes. The current Crafter (shared with the MAN TGE) uses a VAG/MQB key we cut and code on-site with dealer-level software — no recovery to a dealer. See our van key programming service.
My Crafter is a motorhome base — does that change the key job?
Not the key system itself — a Crafter-based motorhome uses the same key as the equivalent panel van of that year. We just need clear access to the OBD port and cab, which habitation conversions sometimes tuck away.
Can you key a fleet of Crafters at our depot?
Yes. We attend yards and depots to supply and programme spare and replacement Crafter keys across a fleet in one visit. See our replacement van keys service.
