VW & Audi Key Programming Explained: MQB, IMMO5 and Why It Needs Dealer-Level Kit

If you have ever been told a Volkswagen or Audi key is “just a cut-and-copy job”, you have been told wrong. A modern VW or Audi will open with almost any correctly-cut blade — but it will not start unless the key’s transponder has been electronically married to the car’s immobiliser. That marrying step is the whole job, and on newer cars it is genuinely difficult. Here is what is actually going on under the badge, and why it decides what your key costs.
The blade is the easy part: HU66
Nearly every VW, Audi, Škoda and Seat of the last two decades uses the HU66 blade — the internal, laser-cut “sidewinder” profile that a locksmith reads and cuts with a Lishi HU66 tool or from your key code. Newer high-security models moved to an updated HU66 variant [verify per model/VIN], but the mechanical cut is rarely the obstacle. Cutting a blade that turns the lock is straightforward. Getting the car to accept it electronically is the expensive bit.
The immobiliser generations: IMMO4 vs MQB / IMMO5
The Volkswagen Group has run through several immobiliser generations, and there is one dividing line that matters more than any other — the switch to the MQB platform:
- Pre-MQB (IMMO4 and earlier): Golf Mk5/Mk6, older Audi A3/A4 and their Škoda/Seat cousins. These use a Megamos Crypto (ID48) transponder and can generally be programmed through the OBD diagnostic port with dealer-level kit. This is the bread-and-butter VAG job — a spare key, or even all-keys-lost, is usually roadside work.
- MQB (2013 onwards): Golf Mk7 onwards, Audi A3 8V onwards, Škoda Octavia III, Seat Leon Mk3 and everything built on the MQB architecture. These run IMMO5 with a secure, AES-encrypted transponder and — crucially — component protection. This is where “why can’t you just cut me a VW key?” gets its real answer.
Note: the exact MQB cut-over depends on model and build date, and the newer AES transponder IDs vary [verify against your VIN]. The safe rule of thumb is that a 2013-or-later Golf, A3, Octavia or Leon is very likely MQB.
Why MQB / IMMO5 needs dealer-level kit
On an MQB car the key is not a standalone item that simply “knows” a code. The immobiliser data is bound up with component protection, which cryptographically links the key, the immobiliser, the dashboard and other modules so they only work together. To add or replace a key, the tooling has to authenticate against that protected data — either through the manufacturer’s online security access, or with specialist aftermarket equipment (such as Autel or Xhorse/VVDI kit with the correct adapters) that can read or calculate the security data for the vehicle.
That is why a high-street key cutter cannot help, and why old diagnostic gear fails: without current, authenticated access to the immobiliser, the car will keep the engine locked no matter how perfectly the blade is cut. It is also why adding a spare while you still have a working key is easier and cheaper than an all-keys-lost — with a working key present, there is a valid reference the system will accept.
What this means for your quote
Three things drive the price of a VW or Audi key, and none of them is guesswork:
- Generation: a pre-MQB OBD job sits in a lower tier than an MQB/IMMO5 component-protected car.
- Spare vs all-keys-lost: adding a spare is quicker and cheaper than generating a key from scratch with no working key present.
- Key form: a plain flip/remote key costs less than a keyless (KESSY) proximity fob.
We do not publish fixed prices for VAG keys, because the honest figure depends on the above. Tell us your registration and we will confirm the exact key type and quote before we travel — no dealer recovery, no surprise on the day.
