Regain Entry Into Your VW Polo

A dead or damaged VW Polo key leaves you going nowhere. Whether the flip blade has finally given up, a key has been lost, or the last one was stolen, an immobilised Polo is a car you cannot start and cannot afford to be without.

With the Polo, the Volkswagen dealer path tends to mean a recovery, a wait for the next booking and a single bill spanning the remote, the coding and the transport. A basic cutter cannot code this A0 MQB car, so a fresh key will open the doors yet the engine stays immobilised until it is properly programmed.

That is Lock City. We are a VAG-savvy mobile locksmith carrying the dealer-level software, the correct transponders and the HU66 blanks your Polo needs. We come to you, repair or replace the key and code it to your immobiliser on-site — no towing, no dealer delay, and every Polo key replacement guaranteed. Phone 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.

VW Polo Keys: Types & What You Need

The Polo has run through two quite different key eras. Telling us the generation (or your reg) means we arrive with exactly the right blank, chip and software:

Polo Mk4 / Mk5 (2002–2017) — pre-MQB

  • Blade: HU66 internal-cut VAG blade.
  • Transponder: Megamos Crypto (ID48) / Hitag2.
  • Remote: flip (switchblade) remote on most trims; a plain transponder key on early base cars.
  • The classic Polo job: the flip-switch spring fails and the blade will not stay out or fold in. We re-shell the key and transfer the electronics rather than sell you a whole new key.

Polo Mk6 (2017–present) — MQB

  • Platform: MQB (the AW-generation Polo), IMMO5 with component protection — the same family as the SEAT Ibiza and Škoda Fabia.
  • Transponder: Megamos AES; flip remote as standard, keyless KESSY on higher trims.
  • All-keys-lost: still roadside-doable, but the MQB component protection means it needs dealer-level immo data and takes longer than adding a spare.

Note: the pre-MQB to MQB change lands around the 2017 Mk6 launch, but the exact chip and any keyless option vary by trim and build date [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm whether yours is the older Megamos car or a component-protected MQB Polo.

The VW Polo at a glance

The Polo (Mk6, type AW, 2017 on) is Volkswagen’s supermini on the A0 MQB platform. It ships with a bladed flip remote as standard, with Keyless an option on higher trims and the GTI.

  • Blade: HU66 flip remote; Keyless optional on R-Line and GTI [verify against your VIN].
  • A common Polo call is a second-hand car sold with one key — we supply and code the coded spare.

The Polo scenarios we see

Polos reach us most often after a used sale with only one key handed over, or a GTI owner who wants a Keyless backup. The AW-generation supermini is a common student and second-car buy around the city.

  • Used Polo delivered with one key.
  • GTI Keyless fob lost on a night out.
  • Student car needing an affordable spare.

VW Polo FAQs

VW Polo Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

Why does my VW Polo flip key keep failing?

It is the single most common Polo key fault. The flip (switchblade) key has a small spring and micro-switches that wear out, so the blade stops springing out or the buttons stop working. We can re-shell the key and transfer your existing electronics and blade — much cheaper than a brand-new coded key.

Can you replace a Polo key without going to a VW dealer?

Yes. We cut and programme Polo keys at the roadside for pre-MQB and MQB cars using dealer-level VAG software. There is no need to recover the car or book into a dealer. See our VW key programming service.

Is a new (2017-on) Polo harder to make a key for?

A little, yes. The Mk6 Polo is on the MQB platform with component protection, so a replacement key needs dealer-level online immo data rather than a simple cut-and-copy. We are equipped for it, but it is worth having a spare cut now while you still have a working key — it is cheaper than an all-keys-lost.

I’ve lost all the keys to my Polo — what happens now?

We treat it as an all-keys-lost job: we generate a fresh key, cut the HU66 blade and code it to your immobiliser at the roadside, so the Polo starts before we leave. More detail on our lost car keys page.

How much does a Polo key cost to replace?

It depends on the generation: a spare flip key for an older Megamos Polo is the cheapest tier, while a keyless MQB key or an all-keys-lost costs more because of the part and the programming. Send us your registration and we will confirm the exact cost before we travel.
