Spare keysRegain Entry Into Your Audi A3
Lost, snapped or stolen your Audi A3 key? The A3 is one of Britain’s most popular premium hatchbacks — and one of the more frustrating to be locked out of, because an Audi immobiliser will not accept a key that has not been electronically coded to your exact car.
Take the A3 to a main dealer and you are usually looking at recovering the car, an appointment days away, and a bill stacking the key, the programming and the recovery. It gets stickier on the MQB A3: it uses component protection, so an all-keys-lost job needs dealer-level immobiliser data — exactly the tooling most locksmiths do not carry.
Lock City is a mobile auto locksmith that keeps its VAG software and stock current for cars like the A3. We come to you, cut the HU66 blade on-site and code the key to your immobiliser at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. Every A3 key replacement and key programming job is guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Monday to Friday, 8am–5:30pm.
Audi A3 Keys: Types & What You Need
The A3 sits right across Audi’s biggest security change, so the generation completely changes the job — and the cost. Here is the real breakdown:
A3 8P (2003–2012)
- Blade: HU66 internal-cut VAG blade.
- Platform: pre-MQB; Megamos / Hitag2 (ID48) transponder — the bread-and-butter VAG job.
- Remote: flip (switchblade) remote key; all-keys-lost is OBD-programmable at the roadside.
A3 8V (2012–2020) & 8Y (2020–present)
- Platform: MQB with component protection (IMMO5) — the A3 8V was one of the first MQB Audis.
- Blade: HU66 / high-security profile; “Audi Advanced Key” keyless proximity offered on higher trims (and the S3 / RS 3).
- All-keys-lost: needs dealer-level immobiliser/component-security data — doable, but a specialist job, not a quick copy.
The jobs we see most on the A3
- Worn flip-key springs where the blade no longer folds out or stays put — a classic VAG fault.
- A “dead” key that is really a flat CR2032 fob battery, not a failed transponder.
Note: the exact 8P / 8V cut-over to MQB component protection varies by build date and trim [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the key type before we come out.
The A3 scenarios we see
A3s arrive as premium compact hatches, Sportbacks and saloons, a common company-car choice. The Advanced Key on higher trims is the usual lost item, while older cars come in for a worn bladed spare before an MOT or a sale.
- Company A3 with a lost Advanced Key.
- Saloon needing a spare before sale.
- Older Sportback flip remote worn out.

Audi A3 Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
How much is a replacement Audi A3 key in Bristol?
It depends on the generation and whether it is a spare or all-keys-lost. A spare flip key for a pre-MQB 8P A3 is the cheaper tier; an MQB 8V or 8Y with component protection, or any all-keys-lost job, costs more because of the dealer-level programming involved. Give us your registration and we will quote the exact figure before we travel.
Can you programme an A3 key at the roadside, or does it have to go to Audi?
For the 8P A3 (2003–2012) we programme at the roadside by OBD. The MQB 8V and 8Y need component-security data for all-keys-lost, which we carry — so in most cases we still come to you rather than send you to a dealer. See our Audi key programming service.
My A3 key still turns but the buttons do nothing — do I need a new key?
Usually not. On the A3 this is nearly always a flat CR2032 fob battery or a worn flip-key micro-switch, not a failed transponder. We can replace the battery or re-shell the flip key for a fraction of a new coded key.
I’ve lost every key to my A3 — can you still help?
Yes. All-keys-lost is one of our common A3 jobs. On the 8P we code a fresh key by OBD; on the MQB 8V/8Y we use dealer-level immobiliser data to generate and marry a new key to the immobiliser. See our lost car keys service.
Does an A3 with Audi Advanced Key need different equipment?
Yes. The Advanced Key is a keyless proximity fob on the MQB A3, so it needs current software and the correct smart blank. We carry both, so we can handle keyless A3s as well as standard flip-key cars. If you run a smaller Audi too, see our Audi A1 key replacement page.
