Spare keysRegain Entry Into Your Audi A4
A dead, lost or stolen Audi A4 key leaves a premium car going nowhere. Whether it is the saloon or the Avant, an immobilised A4 is a car you cannot start — and being without it means bending your week around a dealer’s timetable.
The dealer route means recovering the A4, waiting for an appointment and paying for the key, the coding and the transport. A high-street key cutter cannot rescue you either — the A4 runs Audi’s immobiliser, so an uncoded key will open the door but never crank the engine. On the current A4, component protection means all-keys-lost needs dealer-level immobiliser data.
That is where Lock City comes in. We are a VAG-experienced mobile locksmith carrying the dealer-level software, the correct transponders and the HU66 blanks your A4 needs. We come to you, cut and code the key to your immobiliser on-site — no towing, no dealer delay, and every A4 key replacement guaranteed. Phone 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.
Audi A4 Keys: Types & What You Need
The A4 has run through several generations with very different security, so telling us the year (or your reg) means we arrive with exactly the right blank, chip and software:
A4 B6 / B7 (2000–2008)
- Blade: HU66 internal-cut VAG blade; earlier Megamos transponder.
- Remote: remote-head or separate remote plus transponder key; OBD-programmable.
A4 B8 (2008–2015)
- Platform: pre-MQB; Megamos / Hitag2 (ID48) transponder — the bread-and-butter VAG job.
- Remote: flip (switchblade) remote key; “Audi Advanced Key” keyless proximity on higher trims.
- All-keys-lost: largely OBD-programmable at the roadside on flip-key cars.
A4 B9 (2015–present)
- Security: component protection (IMMO5-generation) with a high-security blade; Advanced Key common.
- All-keys-lost: needs dealer-level immobiliser/component-security data — a specialist job, not a quick copy.
Note: the point at which component protection makes A4 all-keys-lost a dealer-level job varies by build date and trim [verify against your VIN]. Give us your reg and we will confirm the key type and what the job needs before we set off.
The Audi A4 at a glance
The A4 saloon and Avant estate (B9, 2015 on) sits on Audi’s MLB Evo platform. Audi Advanced Key (keyless) is common, and the Avant is a frequent local exec and fleet estate.
- Keyless: Advanced Key common on S line and above; HU66 blade with Megamos AES [verify against your VIN].
- S4 and RS4 variants share the key hardware — the trim mainly affects which fob and coding we bring.
The A4 scenarios we see
A4s reach us as executive saloons and Avant estates on fleet duty, where the Advanced Key has been lost or a high-mileage spare no longer starts the car. S line owners often want a discreet backup kept at the office.
- Advanced Key lost on a business trip.
- Avant fleet estate down to one key.
- S4 owner wanting a spare at the office.

Audi A4 Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
Can you replace an Audi A4 key without going to a dealer?
In most cases, yes. B6, B7 and B8 A4s (2000–2015) are largely programmed at the roadside by OBD. The current B9 uses component protection, so all-keys-lost needs dealer-level immobiliser data — which we carry, so we can still usually come to you. See our Audi key programming service.
My A4 has keyless Advanced Key — can you make a new one?
Yes. The Audi Advanced Key is a keyless proximity fob, and we carry the blanks and current software to code one to your A4. We handle keyless all-keys-lost as well as spares.
How much does an A4 key cost to replace?
It depends on generation and key type: an older B6/B7/B8 flip key is the cheaper tier, while a component-protected B9 or a keyless Advanced Key — and any all-keys-lost — costs more. Send us your registration and we will confirm the exact price before we travel.
My A4 flip key won’t spring out properly — can you fix it?
Yes. Worn flip-key springs and micro-switches are a common VAG fault. We can re-shell the key and transfer your existing electronics and blade rather than sell you a whole new coded key.
I’ve lost all the keys to my A4 — what happens now?
We treat it as an all-keys-lost job: on the older car we code a fresh key by OBD; on the component-protected B9 we use dealer-level immobiliser data to marry a new key to the immobiliser. See our Audi A6 key replacement page if you run the larger saloon too, or our lost car keys page.
