Audi Key Systems Explained
Audi pushed keyless entry down its range early, so the first question on any Audi is usually whether it has Audi Advanced Key — the marque’s proximity comfort-key system — and, on newer cars, which blade profile the emergency key uses. Here is the real picture across the range:
Two blade profiles: HU66 and HU162T
- Most Audis of the last two decades — the A3 8P, A4 B8, TT 8J and their siblings — use the HU66 internal-cut blade, the long-standing VAG profile cut on a Lishi HU66.
- Many newer Audis (A4 B9, A5, Q5, Q7 4M and the latest A3 and A6) move to the HU162T ten-cut blade — a higher-security profile that needs the right blank and tooling [verify against your VIN].
- The classic Audi repair: a flip (switchblade) key whose spring has failed, so the blade no longer folds out or turns cleanly. We re-shell the key and transfer your electronics rather than sell a whole new coded key.
Pre-MQB Audi (A3 8P, A4/A5 B8, first TT)
- Transponder: Megamos Crypto / Hitag2 (ID48).
- Programming: OBD-programmable at the roadside with dealer-level kit — the bread-and-butter VAG job.
- Remote: flip (switchblade) remote key on most trims.
MQB Audi (A3 8V from 2013, current A4, A5, A6, Q2, Q3 and beyond)
- Immobiliser: IMMO5 with component protection (Komponentenschutz), and Megamos AES / Hitag AES secure transponders in place of the older ID48 chips.
- Why it matters: adding or replacing a key needs component-security data pulled with dealer-level online/immo access — not something a generic key cutter can do, and the reason a modern Audi key costs more than an old one.
S/RS models and Audi Advanced Key
- Performance cars are no different under the skin: an S3, S4 or RS Q3 carries exactly the same IMMO5 component security as the standard car — the higher value of the vehicle doesn’t change the method, it just makes a guaranteed, correctly-coded key matter more.
- Audi Advanced Key: this keyless-go proximity system is common on higher A6, Q5 and Q7 trims. Lose every proximity key and we need the full security data, so all-keys-lost takes longer than adding a spare — but we still handle the vast majority at the roadside.
