Spare keysRegain Entry Into Your Audi A1
Lost, snapped or stolen your Audi A1 key? A supermini that does the city commute and the parking-space shuffle is a car you cannot be without — and the A1 is not a car a high-street key cutter can help you with, because Audi immobilisers will not accept a key that has not been electronically coded to your exact vehicle.
Take the A1 to a main dealer and you are usually looking at recovering the car, an appointment days away, and a bill stacking the key, the programming and the recovery together. It gets stickier on the current A1: it sits on Audi’s MQB platform with component protection, so an all-keys-lost job needs dealer-level immobiliser data — exactly the tooling most locksmiths do not carry.
Lock City is a mobile auto locksmith that keeps its VAG software and stock current for cars like the A1. We come to you, cut the HU66 blade on-site and code the key to your immobiliser at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. Every A1 key replacement and key programming job is guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Monday to Friday, 8am–5:30pm.
Audi A1 Keys: Types & What You Need
The A1 straddles the moment Audi switched platforms, so the generation completely changes what the job involves — and the cost. Here is the real breakdown:
A1 8X (2010–2018)
- Blade: HU66 (internal-cut VAG blade).
- Platform: pre-MQB (PQ25, shared with the VW Polo) — the bread-and-butter VAG job.
- Transponder: Megamos / Hitag2 (ID48) crypto chip.
- Remote: flip (switchblade) remote key; all-keys-lost is OBD-programmable at the roadside.
A1 GB / second-generation (2018–present)
- Platform: MQB (MQB-A0) with component protection (IMMO5).
- Blade: high-security HU162T on many builds.
- Keyless: “Audi Advanced Key” proximity fob offered on higher trims (S line, and the S1 hot hatch).
- All-keys-lost: needs dealer-level immobiliser/component-security data — doable, but a specialist job, not a quick copy.
The jobs we see most on the A1
- Worn flip-key springs where the blade no longer folds out or stays put — a classic VAG fault.
- A “dead” key that is really a flat CR2032 fob battery, not a failed transponder.
Note: the exact pre-MQB / MQB cut-over and the HU66-vs-HU162T blade depend on build date and trim [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the key type before we come out.
The A1 scenarios we see
The A1 is Audi’s premium supermini, so we meet it as a first prestige car or a city runabout — often a used buy handed over with a single key, or a dropped flip remote. It shares A0 hardware with the Polo and Ibiza, so spares are quick.
- Used A1 sold with one key only.
- Flip remote cracked from pocket wear.
- S line owner wanting an affordable spare.

Audi A1 Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
How much is a replacement Audi A1 key in Bristol?
It depends on the generation and whether it is a spare or all-keys-lost. A spare flip key for a pre-MQB 8X A1 is the cheaper tier; an MQB A1 with component protection, or any all-keys-lost job, costs more because of the fob and the dealer-level programming involved. Give us your registration and we will quote the exact figure before we travel.
Can you programme an A1 key at the roadside, or does it have to go to Audi?
For the older 8X A1 (2010–2018) we programme at the roadside by OBD. The current MQB A1 needs component-security data for all-keys-lost, which we carry — so in most cases we still come to you rather than send you to a dealer. See our Audi key programming service.
My A1 key still turns but the buttons do nothing — do I need a new key?
Usually not. On the A1 this is nearly always a flat CR2032 fob battery or a worn flip-key micro-switch, not a failed transponder. We can replace the battery or repair the remote for a fraction of a new key.
I’ve lost every key to my A1 — can you still help?
Yes. All-keys-lost is one of our common A1 jobs. On the pre-MQB car we code a fresh key by OBD; on the MQB car we use dealer-level immobiliser data to generate and marry a new key to the immobiliser. See our lost car keys service.
Does an A1 with Audi Advanced Key need different equipment?
Yes. The Advanced Key is a keyless proximity fob on the MQB A1, so it needs current software and the correct smart blank. We carry both, so we can handle keyless A1s as well as standard flip-key cars. If you have a larger Audi too, see our Audi A3 key replacement page.
