Spare keysRegain Entry Into Your VW Passat
Lost your VW Passat key, or had a keyless fob stolen? The Passat is a workhorse saloon and estate — the motorway-mile company car and the family load-lugger — so being locked out or immobilised does not just inconvenience you, it can cost you a working day.
A Volkswagen dealer will typically want the Passat brought in on a truck, an appointment that can sit days out, and payment covering the Keyless Access fob, the coding and the recovery together. An everyday locksmith cannot programme it, so an uncoded key opens the estate but never starts it.
Lock City handles both. As a mobile VAG specialist we carry the dealer-level software and the correct smart-key blanks to code a new Passat key — flip or keyless — to your immobiliser at the roadside. Lost a keyless fob to theft? We can programme a fresh key and disable the missing one so it can no longer start the car. VW Passat Keys: Types & What You Need
The Passat’s key system stepped up sharply with the current B8, so the generation matters for both cost and security advice:
Passat B6 / B7 (2005–2015) — pre-MQB
- Blade: HU66 internal-cut VAG blade.
- Transponder: Megamos Crypto (ID48) / Hitag2.
- Remote / keyless: flip (switchblade) remote as standard; early KESSY keyless offered on higher trims.
- All-keys-lost: OBD-programmable at the roadside with dealer-level kit.
Passat B8 (2015–present) — MQB
- Platform: MQB with IMMO5 and component protection — shared architecture with the Golf Mk7/Mk8 and Audi A3.
- Transponder: Megamos AES; keyless KESSY smart proximity common on SE Business, GT and R-Line trims that dominate the company-car parc.
- Security: the keyless KESSY system is a relay-theft consideration — a Faraday pouch, disciplined spare storage and re-coding after any theft all matter. All-keys-lost needs dealer-level immo data.
Note: the B7-to-B8 (pre-MQB to MQB) change lands around 2015, but keyless availability varies by trim [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm whether yours is the older Megamos car or a component-protected KESSY Passat.
The VW Passat at a glance
The Passat saloon and estate (B8, 2015 on) is a fleet staple around Bristol, so we see high-mileage cars and worn spares. Keyless Access is common, which shapes both the part and the coding time.
- Keyless: Keyless Access common on SEL and R-Line; bladed flip remote on lower trims [verify against your VIN].
- The estate is a frequent trades/rep car — a reliable coded spare avoids a roadside all-keys-lost later.
The Passat scenarios we see
Passats reach us as reps’ and fleets’ motorway estates, high on mileage and short on spare keys. A worn Keyless Access fob on an SEL that no longer unlocks the boot is the classic call before a long drive.
- A rep down to one key before a client trip.
- Keyless boot release stopped working.
- Estate load-lugger needing a spare cut.

Depending on the generation and trim, the VW Passat is fitted with the flip (switchblade) remote key and the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

VW Passat Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
My VW Passat is keyless (KESSY) — can you still make a new key?
Yes. The B8 Passat uses a keyless KESSY smart fob with a secure Megamos AES chip, and we carry both the blanks and the current VAG software to programme one to your car at the roadside, including keyless all-keys-lost.
My keyless Passat fob was stolen — is the car at risk?
Potentially, yes — a stolen keyless fob can start the car. We can programme a new fob and de-register the stolen one so it will no longer unlock or start the Passat. See our stolen car keys service.
Can you come to my workplace for a company-car Passat?
Yes — a lot of our Passat work is exactly that. We attend homes, offices and car parks to cut and programme keys on-site, so you are not off the road waiting for a dealer slot. See our car key replacement service.
Why is a new B8 Passat key more involved than an older one?
The B8 is on the MQB platform with component protection, so a replacement key needs dealer-level online immo data rather than a simple cut-and-copy. We are equipped for it, but a spare cut now while you still have a working key is cheaper than an all-keys-lost later.
Can you programme an older flip-key Passat too?
Yes. B6 and B7 Passats use an HU66 flip key with a Megamos transponder, which we cut and code on-site by OBD. Whether you have an older flip key or a new keyless KESSY fob, we can sort it in a single visit.
