Regain Entry Into Your Mercedes Citan

Lost, snapped or stolen your Mercedes Citan key? The Citan is a compact city van for couriers and trades — and being locked out or immobilised means missed drops and a working day going nowhere.

The badge on the front says Mercedes, but the key system underneath is pure Renault — and that is exactly what trips people up. A main dealer will want the van recovered and booked in at a cost; a general locksmith who assumes it is a “normal Mercedes” arrives with the wrong equipment entirely. The Citan needs someone who knows it is really a Renault Kangoo under the skin.

Lock City does. As a mobile van locksmith we carry the Renault (Hitag) software and the correct Citan cards and keys, come to your home, yard or the roadside, and cut and code on-site — no towing, no dealer wait. We handle lost keys and spare keys alike. Call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.

Know Your Key

Mercedes Citan Keys: Types & What You Need

This is the key fact about the Citan: it is a rebadged Renault Kangoo. Mercedes did not design its key system — Renault did — so everything about the key, chip and programming follows the Renault playbook, not the Mercedes one. That single point changes which tools and blanks the job needs:

Citan W415 (2012–2021)

  • Platform: built on the Renault Kangoo, using Renault’s Hitag immobiliser and key system.
  • Keys: Renault-style key or Hands-Free card depending on trim, with a Hitag transponder — not a Mercedes FBS key.

Citan W420 (2021–present)

  • Platform: based on the current Renault Kangoo, sharing its newer Hitag (AES) key system.
  • Keys: modern Renault-family remote key / card with a secure transponder.

Sibling note: the Citan is the same vehicle as the Renault Kangoo and the Nissan Townstar — all three are the same van with different badges, sharing one Renault Hitag key system. It has nothing in common with the Mercedes Sprinter or Vito, which use Mercedes’ own encrypted keys.

Note: exact key-vs-card and Hitag2-vs-AES depend on trim and build date [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the exact card/key before we travel. See our van key programming service.

Mercedes Citan FAQs

Mercedes Citan Van Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

Is the Mercedes Citan really a Renault?

Under the skin, yes — the Citan is a rebadged Renault Kangoo and uses Renault’s Hitag key and immobiliser system, not a Mercedes one. That is why the right approach is Renault tooling and blanks. It shares its key platform with the Renault Kangoo and Nissan Townstar.

Can you programme a Citan key or card at the roadside?

Yes. We carry the Renault-system software and the correct Citan keys and Hands-Free cards to cut and code on-site — no recovery to a dealer. See our van key programming service.

My Citan uses a card rather than a key — can you replace it?

Yes. Higher-trim Citans use a Renault-style Hands-Free card instead of a conventional key. We supply and programme both cards and keys — just tell us which your van has, or give us the reg and we will confirm.

I’ve lost all the keys to my Citan — what happens?

We treat it as an all-keys-lost job using the Renault system: we generate a fresh key or card and code it to the van on-site, so you are not paying for recovery. See our lost keys service.

Will a Mercedes-only locksmith be able to do my Citan?

Not necessarily — and that is the catch. Someone geared up only for Mercedes FBS keys will arrive with the wrong equipment, because the Citan is a Renault underneath. We come prepared for the Renault Hitag system, which is what the van actually needs.
