The Vito’s key system has moved on a lot between generations, so telling us the age (or your reg) means we arrive with the right key, chip and software:
Vito W639 (2003–2014)
- Legacy keys: earlier vans use Mercedes infrared (IR) / keyless-style keys — a legacy system that needs specific tooling rather than a standard transponder programmer.
- Blade: Mercedes blade with the immobiliser transponder built into the key head.
Vito W447 (2014–present)
- Keys: modern electronic Mercedes remote keys tied to the van’s encrypted immobiliser (FBS-generation security).
- Keyless: Keyless-Go proximity available on higher-spec and Tourer models.
- All-keys-lost: an expertise-led job on the modern encrypted vans; spare keys are the quicker win.
Sibling note: do not confuse the Vito with the smaller Mercedes Citan, which is a rebadged Renault Kangoo and uses the Renault (Hitag) key system — an entirely different platform. The Vito is a true Mercedes and shares its encrypted key architecture with the Sprinter.

My older Vito has an unusual infrared key — can you sort it?
Yes. Earlier W639 Vitos use Mercedes’ legacy infrared/keyless keys, which need specific tooling many locksmiths do not carry. Tell us the year and we will confirm whether yours is an IR-style key or a later electronic remote before we travel.
Is the Vito the same as the Mercedes Citan?
