Spare keysRegain Entry Into Your Mazda3
Lost, snapped or stolen your Mazda3 key? It stops the whole day — the school run, the commute, the shift you cannot be late for. And a modern Mazda3 key is not the five-minute cut-a-copy job many people expect: every Mazda3 key carries a transponder that has to be married to the car electronically before the engine will start.
Take the Mazda3 to a main dealer and you are usually looking at recovering the car (an immobilised Mazda3 will not start), a booking days away, and a bill that stacks the key, the programming and the recovery. A high-street key cutter cannot rescue you either — the Mazda immobiliser will not accept a key that has not been coded to it, and newer Mazda3s use the Advanced Keyless smart system that needs current, dealer-level tooling.
Lock City is a mobile auto locksmith that knows the Mazda key system inside out. We come to you with the right transponders and smart-key blanks for your exact Mazda3, cut the blade on-site and code the key to your immobiliser at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. Every Mazda3 key replacement and key programming job is guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Monday to Friday, 8am–5:30pm.
Mazda3 Keys: Types & What You Need
Knowing which Mazda3 you have tells us exactly which key, chip and tool the job needs — and whether it is a quick spare or a specialist all-keys-lost. The Mazda3 spans the whole Mazda chip story, so the generation matters:
Mazda3 BK (2003–2009)
- Blade: MAZ24 blade.
- Transponder: Texas 4D63 chip in a bladed transponder key or an integrated remote-head key.
- Ford link: the BK Mazda3 shares its C1 platform (and much of its key/immobiliser DNA) with the Ford Focus Mk2 and Volvo S40 of the era — genuinely useful to know when we pick the right chip and tooling.
- All-keys-lost: generally roadside-programmable with the right kit.
Mazda3 BL (2009–2013)
- Key: flip (switchblade) remote on most trims, using a DST80-class (Texas) transponder; Advanced Keyless Entry & Start smart proximity offered on higher trims.
- All-keys-lost: roadside-programmable; keyless AKL takes longer.
Mazda3 BM / BN (2013–2019) & BP (2019–present)
- Key: keyless Advanced Keyless smart proximity common on higher trims, with a secure Mazda smart chip; a hidden emergency blade for the door if the fob battery dies.
- Why it matters: a smart-key all-keys-lost on a newer Mazda3 is a specialist job, not a cheap copy — worth keeping a coded spare.
Note: the exact bladed-to-smart-key and chip cut-over depends on build date and trim [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the key type before we come out.

Mazda3 Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
How much is a replacement Mazda3 key in Bristol?
It depends on the generation and whether it is a spare or all-keys-lost. A bladed transponder key for an older BK Mazda3 is the cheapest tier; an Advanced Keyless smart fob for a newer Mazda3, or an all-keys-lost, costs more because of the fob and the dealer-level programming involved. Give us your registration and we will quote the exact figure before we travel.
Is a Mazda3 key the same as a Ford key?
On the 2003–2009 BK Mazda3 there is a real overlap — it shares its platform and much of its immobiliser DNA with the Ford Focus Mk2 of that era, so the transponder family is closely related. Newer Mazda3s use Mazda’s own Advanced Keyless system. Either way we carry the right blanks and software; tell us the year and we will confirm.
My Mazda3 key still turns but the buttons do nothing — do I need a new key?
Usually not. On the Mazda3 this is almost always a flat fob battery or a worn remote micro-switch, not a failed transponder. We can replace the battery or repair the remote for a fraction of a new key. If a keyless Mazda3 will not detect the fob at all, a battery swap is the first thing to try.
I’ve lost every key to my Mazda3 — can you still help?
Yes. All-keys-lost is a common Mazda3 job. On older bladed cars we cut and code a new key to your immobiliser at the roadside; on newer keyless cars it is a specialist job but still one we handle. See our lost car keys service for how it works.
Is a keyless Mazda3 smart key harder to replace than an older bladed one?
Yes. The Advanced Keyless Mazda3 uses a proximity smart fob with a secure chip, so it needs current dealer-level tooling and the correct smart-key blank rather than a simple cut-and-code. We carry both, so whichever Mazda3 you have we can sort it — but it is exactly why a coded spare is worth having.
