The blade: MAZ24

• Profile: most Mazdas cut on the MAZ24 blade. On older cars this is the working key; on smart-key cars the same laser-cut blade is folded inside the fob as a hidden emergency key for the door.

Older transponder & flip keys

• Key: a chipped transponder key or a flip (switchblade) remote, married to the Mazda immobiliser.
• Chip: a Texas 4D63-class transponder on the Ford-era cars, moving to DST80-class secure chips on later models [verify against your VIN].
• All-keys-lost: programmed by OBD at the roadside on most cars.

Advanced Keyless Entry & Start (smart proximity)

• System: newer Mazda3, CX-5, CX-30 and MX-5 use a smart proximity fob — keyless entry and push-button start, with the fob staying in your pocket.
• Needs: current software and the correct smart-key blank; keyless all-keys-lost takes longer than adding a spare.

The Ford-platform Mazdas — a real gotcha

• Mazda2 DE (2007–2014): built on the Ford Fiesta platform and fitted with a Ford-derived key and transponder, not the later Mazda smart key.
• Mazda3 BK (2003–2009): built on the Ford C1 platform shared with the Focus, so it can take Ford-style keys and programming.
