MG ZS Keys: Types & What You Need
The ZS spans both a bladed-remote era and a smart keyless era, and it comes in petrol and fully electric (ZS EV) form. The generation and trim drive both cost and security advice:
MG ZS & ZS EV (2017–2024, first generation)
- Key: a bladed remote key on lower trims, with smart proximity keyless entry and push-button start on higher trims and most ZS EV cars.
- Transponder: a modern SAIC immobiliser transponder (Hitag2 / AES-family) [verify against your VIN].
- ZS EV: the electric ZS uses the same keyless smart-key architecture as the petrol car — there is no difference in how we programme it.
- All-keys-lost: roadside-programmable, but MG needs the vehicle’s security / PIN code to add a key from scratch — which we obtain and apply.
All-new MG ZS (2024–present)
- Key: smart proximity keyless as standard, on a newer and more secure key architecture.
- Security: as with any keyless SUV, we recommend a Faraday pouch, keeping the spare well away from the front door, and re-coding after any theft so the old fob is dead.

Does the electric MG ZS EV use a different key from the petrol ZS?
No — the ZS EV uses the same keyless smart-key system as the petrol ZS, so there is no difference in how we programme it. If you have lost the key to a ZS EV, we treat it exactly like any other smart-key ZS.
My keyless ZS fob was stolen — is the car at risk?
