MG HS Keys: Types & What You Need
The HS launched in 2019 as MG’s larger family SUV, so its key system is entirely modern — which is exactly why up-to-date software matters here:
MG HS (2019–2024, first generation, inc. PHEV)
- Key: a smart proximity keyless fob (keyless entry and push-button start) across most trims.
- Emergency blade: a mechanical emergency blade is hidden inside the fob for the door if the fob battery dies.
- Transponder: a modern SAIC secure immobiliser chip (Hitag2 / AES-family) [verify against your VIN].
- Plug-in hybrid (HS PHEV): the plug-in hybrid HS uses the same keyless smart-key system as the petrol car — no difference in how we programme it.
- All-keys-lost: roadside-programmable with current software, but MG needs the vehicle’s security / PIN code to add a key from scratch — which we obtain and apply.
All-new MG HS (2024–present)
- Key: smart proximity keyless on a newer, more secure key architecture — a strong argument for keeping a programmed spare.
- Security: keep the fob in a Faraday pouch, store the spare away from doors and windows, and have the key re-coded after any theft so the old fob is dead.

Can you programme a new MG HS smart key at the roadside?
Yes. We keep our MG software and smart-key stock current, so we can code a keyless smart fob to a 2019-onwards HS at the roadside, including all-keys-lost (which needs the vehicle’s security code).
Does the plug-in hybrid MG HS (PHEV) use a different key?
No — the HS PHEV uses the same keyless smart-key system as the petrol HS, so there is no difference in how we programme it. If you have lost the key to an HS PHEV, we treat it exactly like any other HS.
My HS came with only one key — should I get a spare?
Strongly recommended. Many HS SUVs were delivered with a single smart fob, which means losing it turns a simple spare-cut into a costlier all-keys-lost job that needs the security code. A programmed spare now is cheaper and saves you being stranded later. See our spare key service.
My HS won’t detect the key — is the fob dead?
Often it is just a flat fob battery. You can usually still get in with the hidden emergency blade and start the car by holding the fob against the marked spot and pressing start. If a new battery does not fix it, we can test and, if needed, replace the fob.
Is the keyless MG HS at risk of relay theft?
