MG Smart Key Programming: The Rising EV Brand’s Key System Explained

MG has gone from a footnote to one of Britain’s fastest-growing car brands in just a few years — and a lot of new owners are surprised to learn that a modern MG key is nothing like the simple keys of the marque’s past. The first thing to understand is that today’s MG is not the old MG Rover. It is a modern marque built by SAIC, China’s largest carmaker, and its cars — the MG3, ZS, ZS EV, HS, MG4 and MG5 — use current smart-key electronics. This guide explains how those keys work and what programming a new one actually involves.

Modern MG, modern keys

Because MG relaunched as a mainstream EV and hybrid brand, its key systems are contemporary from the start. Depending on the model and trim you will have either a bladed remote key with an electronic transponder (older/lower-trim cars) or a smart proximity keyless fob — keyless entry and push-button start, with a hidden emergency blade for the door if the fob battery dies. The electric ZS EV and the hybrids use the same keyless architecture as their petrol siblings, so being an EV changes nothing about how the key is programmed [verify against your VIN].

Why a copy alone does not work

Every modern MG runs an electronic immobiliser. The key’s transponder is challenged by the car every time you start; a key cut to fit the door but not coded to the immobiliser will open the car but never start it. So an MG key is always two jobs — cutting the blade and programming the electronics — never a simple copy.

The MG difference: all-keys-lost needs the security code

Here is the one thing that most distinguishes MG programming. To add a key from scratch when there is no working key — an all-keys-lost — MG requires the vehicle’s security (PIN) code. That code is the gatekeeper: without it the immobiliser will not accept a new key. With dealer-level equipment we can obtain and apply the correct code for your car, which is exactly the step a general key-cutter cannot do. It is also why an all-keys-lost is a bigger, costlier job than simply adding a spare to a car that already trusts a working key.

What programming involves

A proper MG key programme runs roughly like this:

  • Identify the exact key: confirm the model, generation and whether it is bladed or smart from your reg/VIN, so we bring the correct blank and software.
  • Cut the blade: the mechanical or emergency blade is cut to your locks.
  • Obtain the security code: for an all-keys-lost, we read/derive the car’s PIN so the immobiliser will accept a new key.
  • Programme the key: the transponder or smart fob is registered to the car via the OBD port.
  • Test everything: lock/unlock, keyless entry, push-button start and (on a spare) that the existing keys still work.

Which MG do you have?

  • MG3: a bladed transponder or flip key on the 2011–2023 car; a smart proximity fob on the all-new 2024 MG3 Hybrid+. See the MG3 key page.
  • ZS / ZS EV: bladed remote on lower trims, smart keyless on higher trims and most ZS EVs. See the MG ZS key page.
  • HS: keyless-first from its 2019 launch, including the PHEV. See the MG HS key page.
  • MG4 / MG5: the newer EVs use smart proximity keys on a current, secure architecture.

Roadside or dealer?

You do not need to recover the car to an MG dealer. The vast majority of MG keys — spares and all-keys-lost — can be programmed on your driveway or at the roadside by OBD with current software. A dealer means recovery, a wait and a stacked bill; a mobile specialist who keeps MG software and stock current brings the kit to you.

Get your MG key sorted

Lock City keeps its software and smart-key stock current specifically for modern SAIC-built MG, and covers Bristol, Bath and South Gloucestershire. Whether you drive an MG3, a ZS or ZS EV or an HS, we cut and code the key at the roadside — spares and all-keys-lost — with no towing and no dealer wait.
