Regain Entry Into Your MG3

Lost, snapped or stolen your MG3 key? It stops everything — the school run, the commute, the shift you cannot be late for. And because MG is now one of Britain’s fastest-growing marques, a lot of new MG3 owners find out the hard way that a modern MG key is not a five-minute cut-a-copy job.

Take the MG3 to a main dealer and you are usually looking at recovering the car (the MG3 is immobilised without a coded key), a booking that may be days away, and a bill stacking the key, the programming and the recovery. A general key cutter cannot help either: the MG3 runs an electronic immobiliser, so a key that has not been coded to the car will never start it — and all-keys-lost needs the vehicle’s security code.

Lock City is a mobile auto locksmith that keeps its software and stock current for modern MG — the SAIC-owned marque, not the old MG Rover. We come to you, cut the blade on-site and code the key to your MG3’s immobiliser at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. Every MG3 key replacement and key programming job is guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Monday to Friday, 8am–5:30pm.

Know Your Key

MG3 Keys: Types & What You Need

MG is now a mainstream SAIC brand, so the MG3’s key system has moved on sharply between generations. Knowing which MG3 you have — or just giving us your reg — tells us the exact key, chip and software the job needs:

MG3 (2011–2018) & facelift (2018–2023)

  • Key: a bladed key — either a fixed-head remote or a flip (switchblade) remote depending on trim and year — with an electronic transponder chip.
  • Transponder: a fixed-code immobiliser transponder (commonly a Hitag2 / ID46-family chip on these SAIC cars) [verify against your VIN].
  • All-keys-lost: programmed via the OBD port, but MG requires the vehicle’s security / PIN code to add a key from scratch — which we can obtain and apply.

All-new MG3 Hybrid+ (2024–present)

  • Key: a smart proximity keyless fob (keyless entry and push-button start) on the new-generation hybrid MG3.
  • Security: a newer, more secure key architecture — a strong reason to keep a programmed spare, and to store the fob in a Faraday pouch.
  • All-keys-lost: roadside-programmable with current software; a keyless AKL takes a little longer than adding a spare.

The jobs we see most on the MG3

  • A worn flip blade or a tired micro-switch — often a re-shell and electronics transfer, not a whole new key.
  • A “dead key” that is really just a flat fob battery — a quick swap, not a new key.
  • All-keys-lost on a one-key household, where the single key has been lost and a fresh key must be coded with the security code.

Note: the exact transponder and the flip-vs-fixed and bladed-vs-smart cut-overs vary by trim and build date [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the key type and software before we come out. Book MG3 key programming or a replacement key and we will quote the exact figure first.

MG3 FAQs

MG3 Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

How much is a replacement MG3 key in Bristol?

It depends on the generation and whether it is a spare or all-keys-lost. A spare transponder or flip key for an older MG3 is the cheapest tier; the new-gen MG3 Hybrid+ smart fob, and any all-keys-lost job (which needs the car’s security code), cost more. Give us your registration and we will quote the exact figure before we travel — no surprises.

Can you programme an MG3 key at the roadside, or does it have to go to MG?

At the roadside in the vast majority of cases. We code MG3 keys on-site by OBD with current software, so there is no need to recover the car to a dealer or wait days for an appointment.

My MG3 key still turns but the buttons do nothing — do I need a new key?

Usually not. On the MG3 this is most often a flat fob battery or a worn micro-switch, not a failed transponder. We can replace the battery or repair the remote for a fraction of a new key, and re-cut or re-shell a worn flip blade.

I’ve lost every key to my MG3 — can you still help?

Yes. All-keys-lost is a common MG3 job. We obtain the vehicle’s security code, generate and code a brand-new key to your immobiliser at the roadside, so you are not paying for recovery. See our lost car keys service for how it works.

Is the new MG3 Hybrid+ key different from the older MG3?

Yes. The 2024-on MG3 Hybrid+ uses a smart proximity keyless fob rather than the older bladed transponder key, so it needs the current software and the correct smart-key blank. We carry both, so whichever MG3 you have, we can sort it in one visit.
