Regain Entry Into Your Kia Sportage

Lost your Kia Sportage key, or had a keyless smart fob stolen? On Britain’s best-selling Kia — a family SUV doing the nursery run, the dog walks and the weekend away — being locked out or immobilised grinds the whole household to a halt.

A main dealer will want the Sportage recovered, an appointment you may wait days for, and a bill that stacks the fob, the coding and the transport. A generic locksmith often cannot programme it either: an all-keys-lost Sportage needs the car’s immobiliser PIN / security code as well as the right smart-key blank, and the newer keyless SUV is a recognised relay-theft target, so a missing fob is a security matter, not just an access one.

Lock City fixes both. As a mobile auto locksmith we carry the dealer-level software and the correct Hyundai-Kia smart-key and flip-key blanks to code a new Sportage key at the roadside — reading or looking up the PIN where all keys are lost. Lost a keyless fob to theft? We can programme a fresh key and disable the missing one so it can no longer start the car. See our lost key and stolen key services, or call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.

Know Your Key

Kia Sportage Keys: Types & What You Need

Kia belongs to the Hyundai Motor Group and shares its key and immobiliser systems with Hyundai, so a Sportage key is closely related to a Tucson one. The generation is what decides the blank, chip, and whether it is a quick spare or a full PIN-coded all-keys-lost:

Sportage QL (2016–2021)

  • Key: folding flip remote on most trims; keyless smart proximity entry offered on higher GT-Line and First Edition specs.
  • Transponder: Hyundai-Kia ID46 / ID47-class chip (flip keys), with a secure AES smart chip on keyless fobs [verify against your VIN].
  • All-keys-lost: programmed by OBD at the roadside, using the car’s immobiliser PIN / security code.

Sportage NQ5 (2021–present)

  • Key: keyless smart proximity as standard on most trims, with an emergency blade hidden inside the fob.
  • Variants: petrol, mild-hybrid, full-hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) all use the same smart-key architecture.
  • Security: the keyless system is a relay-theft target. We recommend a Faraday pouch, keeping the spare well away from the front door, and re-coding after any theft so the old fob is dead.

Note: exact blade profile, chip revision and keyless availability by trim vary with build date [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the key type and whether a PIN read is needed before we travel.

Which key does a Kia Sportage use?

Depending on the generation and trim, the Kia Sportage is fitted with the flip (switchblade) remote key and the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

Kia Sportage FAQs

Kia Sportage Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

My Kia Sportage is keyless — can you still make a new key?

Yes. The NQ5 (2021-on) Sportage uses a keyless smart fob, and we carry both the blanks and the current software to programme one to your car at the roadside, including keyless all-keys-lost using the car’s security PIN.

My keyless Sportage fob was stolen — is the car at risk?

Potentially, yes — a stolen keyless fob can start the car, and keyless SUVs are a relay-theft target. We can programme a new fob and de-register the stolen one so it will no longer unlock or start the Sportage. See our stolen car keys service.

Do you need the immobiliser PIN to replace a lost Sportage key?

For all-keys-lost, usually yes. Kia and Hyundai cars use a security PIN / code to authorise a new key. We read it by OBD or look it up from the vehicle details, so this is part of the job — you do not need to source it yourself.

Is a Kia Sportage key the same as a Hyundai Tucson key?

They are close relatives. The Sportage and Tucson are sister cars in the Hyundai Motor Group and share the same key and immobiliser architecture, so the tools and method are essentially the same. We confirm the exact fob and blade for your car by its reg.

Can you programme an older flip-key Sportage at the roadside too?

Yes. The QL Sportage uses a folding flip key that we cut and code on-site by OBD. Whether you have an older flip key or a new keyless smart fob, we can sort it in a single visit.
