Regain Entry Into Your Toyota Prius

Lost your Toyota Prius key or Smart Key fob? The Prius has been keyless for most of its life, and for a private owner or a hard-working minicab it is a car you cannot afford to have off the road. A lost or dead smart key stops you dead — and it is not a job for a high-street key cutter.

A Toyota dealer will typically want the Prius recovered, a booking days out, and a bill covering the smart fob, the coding and the transport. A general locksmith usually cannot help: the Prius uses the Smart Key System, and the newer generations carry an encrypted H-chip (DST-AES) that needs current, dealer-level authentication to programme.

Lock City knows the Prius Smart Key System across every generation. We come to you with the right blanks and dealer-level software, supply the smart key and code it to your immobiliser at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait, fully guaranteed. Book Prius key programming or a replacement key on 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.

Know Your Key

Toyota Prius Keys: Types & What You Need

The Prius was a Smart Key System pioneer, so it has been keyless far longer than most cars — but the chip inside stepped up over the generations, which is what drives the cost and complexity of a replacement:

Prius Gen 2 & Gen 3 (2003–2015)

  • Key: keyless Smart Key System (proximity) with a push-button start — an early adopter of the technology.
  • Transponder: Toyota G-chip-era smart key; programmable with dealer-level kit.
  • Variants: includes the seven-seat Prius+ (from 2012) on the same smart-key architecture.

Prius Gen 4 & Gen 5 (2015–present)

  • Transponder: H-chip (Texas DST-AES) secure Smart Key.
  • Why it matters: the H-chip needs dealer-level authentication, so all-keys-lost on a newer Prius is a specialist job, not a cheap copy.
  • Variants: the Prius Plug-in / Prime uses the same Smart Key System.

What we see most on the Prius

  • Flat smart-fob batteries mistaken for a failed key — often just a CR2032 swap plus the emergency-start procedure.
  • High-mileage minicab Priuses on a single worn fob — a coded spare avoids a costly off-road day.

Note: the exact G-chip-to-H-chip cut-over depends on the generation and build date [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm which Smart Key your Prius uses before we set off.

Toyota Prius FAQs

Toyota Prius Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

Can you programme a Toyota Prius Smart Key at the roadside?

Yes. We code the Prius Smart Key System at your location with dealer-level software across every generation, from the early G-chip cars to the current H-chip models — including keyless all-keys-lost. There is no need to recover the car to a Toyota dealer.

Does my Prius use a G-chip or an H-chip Smart Key?

As a rule of thumb, Gen 2 and Gen 3 Priuses use the earlier G-chip-era Smart Key, while Gen 4 and Gen 5 (2015-on) use the H-chip (DST-AES), which needs dealer-level authentication. Tell us your reg and we will confirm which your Prius carries and what the job involves.

My Prius won’t detect the Smart Key — is the fob dead?

Often it is just a flat CR2032 battery in the smart fob. You can usually still start the car by holding the fob against the marked spot and pressing the start button, and get in with the emergency blade. If a new battery does not fix it, we can test and replace the fob.

I drive a Prius minicab — can you fit spares at my base?

Yes. We know a Prius off the road is lost fares, so we come to your home, work or base to cut and code spare Smart Keys, avoiding a costly off-road day if the only fob fails. See our car key replacement service.

Does the Prius Plug-in (Prime) or Prius+ use a different key?

No — the seven-seat Prius+ and the Prius Plug-in / Prime use the same Smart Key System as the standard Prius of their era, so we programme them the same way. Give us the reg and we will bring the right blank and software.
