Toyota All Keys Lost: What Happens on a Smart-Key Toyota

Losing your last working key to a Toyota is a particular kind of stress — the car will not start, and on a modern keyless model it is not obvious who can actually help. The reassuring part is that all-keys-lost (no working key at all) is a routine job for a specialist auto locksmith: you usually do not have to have the car recovered to a dealer, and you do not have to buy a new car computer. This guide explains what is involved on a smart-key Toyota so you know what to expect.

Why it is harder than making a spare

When you still have one working Smart Key, the car is already “awake” to a key it trusts, so adding a spare is quick. With all keys lost, the car trusts nothing — so the whole security system has to be brought into a state where it will accept a brand-new key from scratch. On the newer, encrypted H-chip (DST-AES) Toyotas that came in from around 2015, this needs a secure seed-key authentication with the car, which is why it is a specialist job rather than a five-minute cut-and-code. Older G-chip Toyotas are more straightforward and often fully roadside-programmable. Either way it costs more and takes longer than a straightforward spare.

What the job involves

  • Prove the car is yours: we ask for ID and proof of ownership (V5C/logbook) before we generate keys to a car — standard practice, and your protection too.
  • Get into the car: if it is locked, we gain non-destructive entry — no drilling, no broken glass. See our locked-out and lost-key service.
  • Cut a fresh blade: the Toyota emergency/mechanical blade (a TOY43 or TOY48-family profile) is cut to your locks, so the door will open even on a keyless car.
  • Authenticate to the immobiliser: with dealer-level kit we complete the security handshake the car demands — on an H-chip Toyota this is the step ordinary key-cutters cannot do.
  • Programme and test a new key: the new Smart Key (or transponder key on older models) is registered via the OBD port, then tested end-to-end — entry, start and the remote buttons.

One-key households are most at risk

Here is the trap a lot of Toyota owners fall into: plenty of used RAV4s, C-HRs, Corollas and Priuses are sold with only one Smart Key. The day that single key is lost or fails, you are straight into an all-keys-lost job — the most expensive version — with no fallback. If you have only one key, the cheapest insurance you can buy is a programmed spare while you still have a working key. Our guide to Toyota Smart Key programming explains that quicker add-a-key process.

Is it definitely lost — or just not detected?

Before you commit to all-keys-lost, rule out the simple stuff. If the key is in your hand but the car will not detect it, that is very often a flat fob battery, not a lost key — see our key fob battery guide, which also covers the emergency start trick that gets you moving on a dead fob. And if a key was stolen rather than mislaid, our stolen car keys service covers coding a new key so the missing one can no longer start the car.
