Which Toyota you have decides the chip, the blade and whether a replacement is a quick spare or a full dealer-level job. Here is the honest breakdown.
Blade profiles: TOY43 and TOY48
- Older Toyotas (Aygo, earlier Yaris, Auris and Corolla) use the TOY43 blade; newer high-security models moved to the TOY48 blade [verify against your VIN].
- The first-generation Aygo (2005–2014) is a PSA-related car — built alongside the Peugeot 107 and Citroën C1 — so its key and immobiliser follow the PSA platform rather than mainstream Toyota.
Transponders: G-chip vs H-chip — the whole story
- G-chip (Texas DST80): the mid-era transponder, OBD-programmable with the right kit. Found on many pre-2015 Toyota keys.
- H-chip (Texas DST-AES, ~2015 onward): the encrypted smart-key chip. It needs dealer-level seed-key authentication before a new key can be added — a specialist job, not a cheap copy. The exact G-to-H cut-over depends on model and build date [verify against your VIN].
Smart Key System (keyless proximity)
- Toyota pioneered proximity keyless entry and push-button start on the Prius, and the Smart Key System is now common across the RAV4, C-HR, Corolla and higher Yaris trims.
- A smart key that suddenly is not detected is very often just a flat CR2032 fob battery, not a failed key — held against the start button it will normally still start the car.

- On smart-key (H-chip) Toyotas, all-keys-lost is the involved job: it takes dealer-level authentication and longer on-site than adding a spare, so keeping a programmed spare is far cheaper than being caught with none.
- The Proace and Proace City vans ride Stellantis (PSA) van platforms, so their keys follow that system rather than Toyota’s mainstream one [verify against your VIN].
